Aberdeen Science Centre announces free day of renewable energy and innovation activities – Aberdeen Business News

ABERDEEN Science Centre is to welcome visitors free of charge this Saturday, February 15, for a day exploring the innovation behind renewable energy and wind power.

The Amazing Air event is being sponsored by Vattenfall, the company behind the innovative European Offshore Wind Deployment Centre (EOWDC), Scotland’s largest offshore wind test and demonstration facility.

Vattenfall has partnered with Aberdeen Science Centre since 2017 and this is the latest in a series of events aimed at educating and exciting members of the public about energy from wind.

The Amazing Air day will run from 10am to 5pm at Aberdeen Science Centre’s temporary home at 107 George Street.

Children and adults alike will have the opportunity to build and test their own wind turbine in a hands-on Amazing Air workshop, discovering tasks involved in the operation and maintenance of wind farms and how wind turbines help to meet our energy demands, while helping to combat climate change

A Water Cycle workshop will look at the importance of the water cycles, how humans interact and affect it, and what we can do to preserve it.

The Lego WeDo activity will explore how technology can be used and visitors can create their own invention to help meet the energy demands.

There will also be storytelling and make and take sessions during the day, with the opportunity to make and take home a pin wheel.

Bryan Snelling, chief executive of Aberdeen Science Centre, said: “We are proud of our continued partnership with Vattenfall, which has enabled us to offer the Amazing Air day and open to the public free of charge.

“Renewable energy, and particularly wind power, and its role in addressing climate change is a current hot topic so this is a great opportunity for children and adults to learn more about the technology behind wind farms.

“We also hope to inspire visitors to think about career options in renewables and expand their knowledge when it comes to energy. We look forward to welcoming many visitors to Aberdeen Science Centre on Saturday, February 15.”

ASC and Vattenfall have developed a series of public events and outreach activities themed around offshore wind and technology, which have also been rolled out to schools and nurseries and to date have reached more than 4,000 people in the North-east.

Aberdeen Science Centre is currently undergoing a multi-million-pound redevelopment project which will see the creation of a state-of-the-art science centre which reflects the key priorities of the STEM agenda for both industry and education. The revamped centre is scheduled to open at the Tramsheds on Constitution Street in early summer 2020.
