Miraikan, Odaiba – Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation
If you, or your child, love science than the Miraikan in Odaiba, one of our Top Recommended Tokyo Kids Museums, is a great place to spend a half day. The official name is The National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation. Great interactive exhibits about the universe, solar system, robotics and earth today and future. The ideal age for permanent exhibits is age 6 and up, and the special exhibits are for ages from 3 and up.
The Miraikan website states that Miraikan is a place where we can understand the things happening in our world today from a scientific point of view and have discussions while considering the future that awaits us. We believe that science and technology are part of our culture. We provide an open forum for all to ponder and discuss the future roles of science and technology.
The special exhibit running now until November 4, 2019 is The Mammoth. ‘Transcending time, mammoths make a return, as their ‘resurrection’ means the beginning of a new dream and challenge for mankind. Including the Yukagir Mammoth, which generated an enormous interest amongst 7 million enthusiastic fans at the ‘Expo 2005 Aichi Japan,’ recently excavated various rare frozen specimens from the permafrost of the Russian Federation, will also be on show as a world premiere, making it the biggest mammoth exhibition ever.’ #5 on our list of 2019 Tokyo Family Friendly Museum Exhibits
After the exhibit visit the 4th floor Curiosity field where children are encouraged to use their imagination. There are various activities to enjoy; a large foam lego brick section to build, create your own wall maze, and the wonder corner where kids color and scan a shape that is projected onto a large touch screen. Touch your shape and watch it move or make sounds. There is also a small man-made hill where you can roll various sized balls from the top, scraps drawer to create your own craft using recycled materials and a small library (Japanese books only). The curiosity field is open from 10:00 – 17:00 and is open in 45 min increments with 35 minutes of playtime (5 min taken for explanation of rules and 5 min for clean up).
