Sustainable Innovation category added to Fashion Awards

It’s safe to say that sustainable innovation is high on the list of priorities for fashion designers.

We have seen a change in the zeitgeist over the past few years, with climate change taking the headlines, both in theory and in reality.

And with the textile industry responsible for producing more greenhouse gasses than most countries, it’s a problem that must be faced head-on.

All clothes begin with their designers, and today’s fashion icons are making an effort to change not only how they create clothes, but also people’s attitudes towards sustainability.

The Green Carpet

In 2017, the World’s first-ever “Green Carpet Awards” were held in Italy.

The country’s top luxury designers went head-to-head to snap up the title of the “greenest” brand as the industry adopts sustainability and eco-friendly fashion.

Famous brands including Giorgio Armani, Gucci, Prada and Valentino competed with emerging designers for the awards, which recognise the commitment of individuals and Italian fashion houses to sustainability.

There are 12 awards in total, with Stella McCartney winning the award this year for Outstanding leadership in Sustainable Fashion.

Australian Fashion Awards join the club

IMG recently announced this year’s fashion awards would include a new category of Sustainable Innovation, which will recognise and celebrate the Australian brands that are leading the way in sustainable fashion.

Natalie Xenita, fashion group executive director for IMG, said that the new award aligns perfectly with the existing award categories.

“With the introduction of the Sustainable Innovation award, we are celebrating the Australian industry’s growing dedication to lessening fashion’s impact on our environment.

“This award category complements our existing accolades, which not only celebrate Australia’s exceptional talent, but highlight the most noteworthy innovations shaping our industry and its future,” she said.

The award ceremony will be held this month in Sydney.

What the future holds for the fashion industry

For many in the fashion industry, green is the new black.

Climate change is a real and present danger to the world, and sustainable innovation is high on the list for the top brands, fashion houses and designers around the world.

Customers are also demanding change, wanting to know what their goods are made of, where and in what capacity they are produced, and if people suffered in the process.

As a more environmentally aware generation takes over the market, those companies who ignore the demands of the public are going to fall behind those who listen and change their practices accordingly.

There are many ways in which even the smallest company can change its practices to be more sustainable, some of which we’ve talked about before.

Sustainable Innovation is the future

There is a major change underway throughout the world, and the fashion and textile industries aren’t immune to it.

Big changes need to be made if we are to stop climate change, and as a leading contributor to greenhouse gasses, our industry needs to be leaders in the fight.

From a business point of view, it makes sense to become a champion of environmentalism.

The younger generation take sustainability very seriously, and know which companies are genuinely trying to help and which are pretending to be environmentally conscious.

Those who don’t listen to their clients and customers will surely fall behind and eventually fail as a business.
