Technology and innovation: A key to a sustainable future

The early humans had primary contradictions with nature and depended on it to provide them with food and shelter while worshiping nature’s objects, which threatened their existence. With the invention of iron ore, mankind (in its history) has had the first taste of innovation and technology, which allowed them to mold natural resources to best suit their interests. Over time, there have been further technological innovations, which not only made the most laborious tasks simpler but also reduced mankind’s dependence on nature.

The construction of technological innovations has always been social and developed by society’s collective knowledge for its overall betterment. But technology today, unlike ancient times, is fast evolving. It’s no surprise that one invention stands a fair chance of getting outmoded by the other every day. Therefore, scientists and tech-geeks are increasingly focusing on making tech-backed innovations more sustainable to reduce the depletion of nature’s resources for the benefit of our future generations.

The evolution in technology

The invention of the simplest of tools paved the way for some of the most complex technical solutions we depend on today. For instance, the Abacus, a simple counting device invented in Babylon in the third century B.C., led to the invention of the Jacquard loom centuries later, which was based on the concept of mechanising calculations. The loom brought about the Industrial Revolution in the history of mankind and gave rise to a new class society. The computer, one of the greatest inventions of the 19th Century, was a modernised calculator that could perform a series of calculations on several variables to solve a complex problem.

Today, it might seem wondrous how we achieved the greatest technological milestones much before technology had evolved enough to encompass the tastes and preferences of the customers in the form of data points. In fact, computers that took Apollo 11 to the moon in 1969 had fewer processing powers than today’s cellphone and Nintendo Game Boy. So with smart devices taking center stage in our lives, we have already been introduced to tech-back multipurpose devices.

Speaking of it, there was a faint and nearly negligible possibility that technological inventions back in the day would be as indispensable to the people as they are today. Why? Because it was only 38 years after the radio was invented that it reached an audience of 50 million, while the iPod only took 3 years to reach the same milestone. So, it concludes that technology and change go hand in hand.

The need for technology in business development

Technology has helped trade and commerce thrive in various markets globally. With technologically-backed solutions, it is easier for entrepreneurs and stakeholders to forecast future trends, cater to the needs and preferences of dynamic business markets and minimise risks in the business process. Such solutions have also refined the entire business process, which is conducive to productivity at its optimum. But how important the inculcation of tech-backed solutions is today is reflected by the fact that most businesses are investing heavily in technology to get an edge over their contemporaries. Hence, thinking ahead technologically is a crucial part of every business today.

Trends in tech-enabled innovation

We understand that the speed of technological changes shall only accelerate in the future. As of today, we see new-age technology start-ups redefine the global outlook and roadmaps. But the good news is that sustainability, which has been on the fringes of technological development, is gradually progressing towards being the focal point of things. In the post-covid world, we need to understand the importance of sustainable technology so that a little goes a long way.

The human population stands at 7.97 billion today and has been steadily accelerating at 1.1%. Therefore, the need of the hour is to develop tech-backed solutions that go the long haul, thereby reducing the environmental impact.

At the current rate, technological developments shall continue to impact lives with each passing day. We must, in turn, strive towards making such developments more sustainable to reduce our environmental impact.
