We Turned 2! | Legal Innovation Zone

The Legal Innovation Zone celebrated our second birthday party on Thursday, May 4 with many of our friends in the startup and legal community.

A lot happened this year. We incubated and supported over 15 startups that are making great progress in building solutions to make the law faster, cheaper and more accessible. Our first ever Ontario Access to Justice Challenge took place in partnership with the Ministry of the Attorney General, along with our Legal Tech Bootcamp for Ryerson students interested in exploring careers in law and technology. We organized over 50 events ranging from educational workshops surrounding entrepreneurship to legal tech panels, along with spreading our reach globally in San Francisco, the UK, and Ukraine.

Not only did we celebrate these accomplishments, we also rebranded.

The LIZ is a unique incubator that has a distinct innovative attitude to support our startups. The concept behind the visual identity for the LIZ is one of ambition and the constant flow of ideas. Hence, the infinity-like look to the “v” and “a” in our name. It also reflects the notion of networking, social interaction, and the constant flow of new technological ideas.

The LIZ is more than a tech work space. It is one of collaboration, innovation and social interaction. All elements that when together produce stronger and more creative solutions for everyone. We curate the best startups that we think will have a positive effect on the consumers of legal services. And yes, we say “consumers,” not “clients” because we understand that listening to and meeting the needs/preferences of the consumer is key to improving the legal profession. We will continue to foster innovation and support our startups and partners and we look forward to the solutions they will create and implement this year.

Thank you to everyone who came out to celebrate our second year anniversary. Special thank you to Ryerson’s Creative Services team for all their help in the creation of our logo; Ryerson University for their continued support, and our startups for their passion and drive to build better legal solutions. And subscribe to our newsletter for all our updates and news!
