Joe Brady stresses innovation for Carolina offense

The Carolina Panthers hired Joe Brady as their new offensive coordinator earlier this week, and at his introductory press conference, Brady stressed the importance of innovation on the offensive side of the ball, according to Jourdan Rodrigue of The Athletic.

The Panthers were a slightly below average offensive club in 2019, ranking 19th in the NFL in yardage and 20th in points per game, but that came with a whole lot of instability at quarterback.

Cam Newton went down with a foot injury two games in to the season, forcing Carolina to turn to Kyle Allen. Allen put forth some strong performances early on and led the Panthers to four straight wins, but his success was short-lived.

Due to Allen’s struggles, Carolina turned to rookie quarterback Will Grier in Week 16, but he was even worse.

The Panthers went just 5-11 on the season, leading to the firing of long-time head coach Ron Rivera as well as offensive coordinator Norv Turner.

With Newton seeming likely to come back for 2020, Carolina has turned to Brady, who served as passing game coordinator for LSU this season and helped quarterback Joe Burrow have arguably the greatest season in NCAA history.

Joe Brady also has some NFL experience, as he served as an offensive assistant for the New Orleans Saints from 2017 through 2018.

Obviously, succeeding as a coordinator on the professional level is an entirely different animal, but there is some excitement surrounding Brady, which is probably the first time Panthers fans have been excited about anything in a few years.
