CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY — A Metals and Engineering Innovation Center (MEIC) will soon rise in this city after the Department of Science and Technology in Region 10 (DOST-10) entered into a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with the University of Science and Technology of the Philippines (USTP) here on Tuesday.
The MEIC will be equipped with various tools and technologies from the DOST-Metals Industry Research and Development Center (DOST-MIRDC) amounting around PHP7 million, DOST-10 Director Alfonso Alamban said in a statement on Wednesday.
Alamban said the center will get an additional PHP2 million funding assistance from DOST-10.
“The metals industry is the mother of all industries. Every industry that exists today utilizes metals and engineering in its operations. Hence, we at DOST provide coordination of scientific and technological efforts and ensure that the results are geared and utilized in areas of maximum economic and social benefits for the people in the Region 20,” Alamban said.
He said the USTP-MEIC is part of the agency’s effort to establish metals and engineering innovation centers in five regions across the country.
The project, he said, aims to develop a strong partnership between DOST and regional academic institutions to promote innovation culture and strengthen both parties’ capacity and capability in the field of metalworking. (PNA)
