Innovation and Leadership in Government
ANNOUNCEMENTS:
In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, this year’s Innovation and Leadership in Government Program (ILG) will be offered as a live virtual, part-time program, from September 21 through November 10, 2020, to facilitate the continuation of current government work in the face of this crisis. The ILG 2020 program will present the traditional ILG curriculum through live virtual sessions with Georgetown University faculty and visiting lecturers, together with virtual visits to institutions in the Washington, DC, area featuring guest speakers from multilateral organizations, government institutions, think tanks, and public advisory companies to analyze some of the most pressing challenges facing the public sector in the United States and throughout the region, including the consequences of this COVID-19 pandemic. The live sessions will allow faculty to tailor-make the content of their courses to fit the ILG participants’ public policy proposals. In addition, the ILG 2020 program will include teambuilding opportunities and peer-to-peer coaching sessions to allow participants a space to share ideas, experiences, and best practices. The program will be taught in Spanish. Read the full press release here.
The Call for Applications for ILG 2020 is now closed. This first virtual ILG program is made possible thanks to the generous support of Facebook Latin America.
Georgetown University’s Innovation and Leadership in Government (ILG) is a professional development, non-credit executive education program for mid-career public managers from Latin America and the Caribbean. The program equips participants with analytical frameworks and tools to develop and implement innovative public policies while providing them with leadership development opportunities to effectively promote new ideas and programs in their respective government entities.
The rapid and continued advancement of new technologies is providing a pathway for governments to achieve poverty reduction, social and economic inclusion, and increase productivity. Public service leaders across Latin America and around the globe are facing unprecedented challenges, with more citizens demanding better schools, safer streets, and superior healthcare, with more equitable access for all. As a result, public institutions are forced to come up with new and creative ways of delivering these services, amidst longstanding cultures of unaccountability, inter-agency turf wars, and deeply bureaucratic processes. Innovation in government requires public managers to recognize and act upon new ideas and ways of providing services, while maximizing limited resources by engaging with the public, taking new risks, and harnessing new technologies. There are greater pressures on governments to be more accountable and provide measurable results to citizens.
The Innovation & Leadership in Government Program aims to empower Latin American public managers to become agents of positive change in the region by equipping them with the tools, knowledge, and connections to drive digital transformation in their countries, and jointly support shared prosperity across the region. Every year, ILG brings together public policymakers from Latin America with at least five years of experience. Candidates participate in a three-week program at Georgetown University where they exchange ideas, best practices, and analyze some of the most pressing challenges facing the public sector throughout the region.
ILG goes beyond a traditional academic program as it provides an innovative model to promote experiential learning and a unique networking platform to foster ties beyond the duration of the program. The curriculum combines academic courses that offer theoretical frameworks and knowledge to develop and advance a public policy proposal, along with practical applications and guest speakers from related fields for sharing real-world experiences. As a program that serves mid-career public leaders, ILG emphasizes peer-to-peer learning by sharing work experiences, lessons learned, and best practices. The program is conducted in Spanish. Some classes may be taught in English with simultaneous translation to Spanish.
ILG is organized by the Latin America Leadership Program with the generous support of Microsoft, in collaboration with the McDonough School of Business Office of Executive Education.
