Innovation Spotlight: Bite — American Conservation Coalition
Your tube of toothpaste seems like a harmless everyday object, but the plastic impact adds up quickly. More than 1 billion plastic toothpaste tubes are thrown away every year – that equals the same volume as 50 Empire State Buildings ending up in landfills and oceans annually. One company decided enough is enough and is changing the way we think about toothpaste: Bite.
Bite is a company striving to reframe not only the way we buy dental products, but also the quality of these common purchases. It was founded on the belief that the products we use for a brighter smile don’t need to come at the expense of the environment. The team at Bite also believes that daily habits matter and that the small changes we make together can add up to something big.
Since its founding, the company has expanded to include products like sustainable bamboo toothbrushes and a kind of floss that comes in a glass dispenser ( made without plastic or silk). But the key product that the company was built upon is their toothpaste bits – dried toothpaste tabs that are delivered in reusable, recyclable glass jars.
“I didn’t set out to start a company,” explains Lindsey McCormick, Bite founder and CEO. “I just wanted to solve a problem.”
