OPPO Has Set Up Its First 5G Innovation Lab In India – NepaliTelecom

Oppo, a global smartphone brand, has set up a 5G innovation lab in India for the first time. It is located at Hyderabad Research and Development Center. In fact, this lab is Oppo’s first 5G lab outside China. Earlier Oppo Collaborated with Ericsson to establish a joint 5G lab.

OPPO’s new 5G lab 

Oppo’s new lab is dedicated to elevate the global 5G experience and further develop a 5G connected ecosystem. The head of the OPPO Research Institute, Levin Liu says, “With the establishment of the 5G lab in India, we aim to achieve more breakthroughs in core technologies within the 5G ecosystem and drive industry transformation with our partners.” 

The 5G lab aims to contribute to the development of the 5G, AI, and connectivity globally by developing path-breaking innovative solutions and advanced technologies. Oppo’s new 3+N+X strategy also aptly ties with the development across these fields. Additionally, Oppo will be introducing three more labs that will particularly focus on Camera, Power & Battery, and Performance.  

OPPO’s achievements so far

Oppo is a leading name in the tech industry. It has made some significant contributions to the formulation of 5G network standards, app development, product development, and innovation. 

By the end of September 2020, this tech-giant has submitted over 3,000 5G standard-related proposals to 3GPP. Similarly, it has declared over 1,000 families of 5G standard patents to European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI). Furthermore, according to a Japanese research institution, NGB Corporation, Oppo is one of the top ten companies in the world that has 5G patent families declared. 

The company completed Europe’s first standalone voice and data calls over a commercial 5G network in Switzerland recently. Similarly, Oppo successfully conducted the first 5G WhatsApp call from India. 

This China-based company has already established 6 Research Institutes and 4 Research and Development Centers globally, but the 5G lab in India is the first Innovation lab overseas. Oppo has partnerships with more than 50 organizations worldwide in order to deliver 5G services worldwide.

India is expecting to launch 5G technology in 2021. So, Oppo may possibly partner with telcos like Airtel, Jio, and chipset makers like Ericsson and Qualcomm. It will be interesting to see if they will launch Oppo’s first 5G smartphone in India a budget-friendly, an upper midrange, or a 5G-enabled flagship phone.
