Transport Transition Summit: An acceleration of innovation needed to decarbonise transport sector – Climate Action

The Transport Transition Summit took place this week on the 11 & 12 May, convening stakeholders across policy, investment, technology and regulation tackling the big issue challenges in transport’s decarbonisation.

It was clear from the discussions that there will need to be an acceleration of innovation to decarbonise the transport sector. Plus clearer policies and frameworks must be implemented to ensure the switch to low emissions.

Highlights Video

UKs Path to Net Zero
Rt Honorable Grant Shapps laid out the UK governments plans to promote the decarbonisation of the transport sector and emphasized the need to make transport as clean as possible by getting more people cycling and walking, and by electrifying large stretches of the rail network.

Future Mobility

Kristof Vereenooghe, CEO EVBox Group, stressed that it is our obligation to reshape and redefine the future of mobility and that new business models, technologies, and ways of thinking will make the difference to bringing global transport closer to a carbon neutral future.

Cities

Lilli Matson, Chief Safety, Health & Environment Officer at Transport for London, highlighted that cities have a massive role to play in the transition to zero carbon, putting the quality of life at the heart of sustainable cities and encouraging people to travel in new ways.

Sustainable Aviation Fuel

Adrian Gene at Etihad Airways, spoke on the importance of SAF as a strategic topic, but the challenges of it being expensive due to it not being scaled up. He stressed we need to incentivise the market and how government, finance and technology sectors can help to do that.

Zero Emissions Freight
Our virtual panel then discussed goals for decarbonising road freight whereby Lola Ortiz Sánchez General Director of Planning and Mobility Infrastructure City of Madrid, laid out how the City of Madrid will promote zero emissions freight through policies, and incentivising the switch to low emissions.

Post-Pandemic
Ashish Joshi, Global Supply Chain Director – B2B/B2B2C ecommerce and Logistics Sustainability at Unilever, highlighted the positive impact COVID-19 has had in the modal shift of individuals and companies ‘staying local’ and reducing travel.

Decarbonising Supply Chains
Mads Stensen, Senior Director of Sustainability at Maersk, laid out the solutions and next stages that need to be made in order to decarbonise the sector, suggesting eco delivery solution to save on bio fuel as a key example. But must scale on these together with there customers and then break it into other technologies to improve in the future.
