Denim Futures Conference to Support Sustainable Innovation & Collaboration

Denim has a long, multi-century history, but what lies ahead for the material? As sustainability has come under the lens, denim has been called out for its outsize environmental impact within the broader apparel sector, but this can change courtesy of advances that reduce water, chemical and energy use.

The Mills Fabrica, the Hong-Kong based sustainable innovation investor and incubator for the fashion and food industries, is hosting a hybrid Denim Futures conference to explore what’s next. From Sept. 21-22, brands, manufacturers and innovators will gather to share insights, network, and explore collaborations.

Lenzing’s own Dennis Hui, global business development manager denim, will be speaking on a panel about “Next-Gen Fiber & Fabrics,” exploring how the fibers beyond cotton that can help brands and mills meet sustainability needs. “I am looking forward to this time for the denim community to join together and discuss ways to reduce the environmental impact of producing denim,” stated Dennis. Lenzing will also be part of a solutions showcase, along with a number of our mill partners, including Advance Denim, Cone Denim, Kaihara, Prosperity Textile and Panther Group.

One of the topics that the conference will cover is the culture behind denim, looking at the material’s history and place in lifestyles. Trend forecaster WGSN will also give a rundown of the industry landscape and the impact that the youth are having on the category. A panel will also explore what the next generation will bring to the workforce, while another theme will be what digitalization means for denim.

Denim Futures will also have a multifaceted conversation about sustainability. Circular design, lifecycle assessments and upcycling are all topics on the agenda.

Two of the aims of the event are to explore collaborations within the industry and educate attendees on the importance of sustainable production and consumption.

Speakers include executives from HSBC, The Lycra Company, Alvanon, Archroma, FibreTrace, PVH, Jeanologia, Unspun, Hong Kong Design Institute and Hong Kong Polytechnic University, among others.
