Storytelling & innovation collide at the Riverland’s Twenty Third Street Distillery • Glam Adelaide
South Australia’s Riverland is a magical destination, filled with stunning conservation parks, a thriving fruit industry, and Australia’s largest wine region. Whether you’re planning a family holiday or a romantic getaway, the Riverland often ticks all the bucket list boxes.
If you’re about to make the drive to the Riverland region, there’s a fascinating (and delicious) tourist destination worth a visit – Twenty Third Street Distillery.
Steeped in history, the Twenty Third Street Distillery site was originally established in 1914 to capitalise on the flourishing Riverland fruit harvests of the time. It was also home to a range of South Australian labels such as Chateau Tanunda, Renmano Wines, Berri Estate, and Hardy’s Wines.
After the site’s sad closure in 2004, new life was breathed into the property in the form of a family-led distillery, Twenty Third Street. The property, named after its address, officially opened on the 23September 2016.
The beating heart of Twenty Third Street Distillery is the property’s South Australian built copper stills, created in the same era as the building itself.
Once a part of Hardy’s Reynella and Tintara in McLaren Vale, the stills were responsible for producing the grandfather of Australian brandy, the iconic Black Bottle Brandy.
After years of repairs and relocations, the 7500 litre stills emanate a vintage, old-world aesthetic, complementing the distillery’s grand, high ceilings, vast timber beams and elegant interiors.
Twenty Third Street now specialises in award-winning gins, vodkas, brandies, and whiskeys, all of which strive to modern, innovative, and story-telling drops. Notably, Managing Director Angelo Kotses also released a punchy and authentically made Ouzo, named after his grandfathers.
The Ouzo label proudly features a photo of Kotses’ grandfathers in Aetos Florina Greece on the day Angelo was born, exemplifying how family and storytelling plays a big part in Twenty Third Street’s company ethos.
Alongside Twenty Third Street’s commitment to storytelling is innovation, creating new, tantalising flavours unheard of in the region. For example, the distillery launched a Mulberry Gin in March 2022.
Combining local mulberries and orange zest from the Riverland, the Mulberry Gin offers a herbal and peppery complexity, lifted with juniper and citrus. What’s more, the bold drop has a show-stopping crimson colour the promises to level up your next cocktail.
If you’re interested in exploring all that Twenty Third Street Distillery has to offer, the property also offers behind the scenes tours, guided tastings, blend-your-own gin experiences, age-your-own whisky events, and cocktail masterclasses.
