DR GBADEYAN RECEIVES HIS FIRST NOMINATION FOR HIS INNOVATION AT THE NSTF AWARDS

Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Durban University of Technology (DUT), Dr Oluwatoyin Joseph Gbadeyan, has received his first nomination at the National Science Technology Forum (NSTF) South32 Awards, which will be hosted simultaneously in Cape Town and Johannesburg on Thursday, 13 July 2023. He is nominated for the Innovative Award: Corporate Organisation.

Dr Gbadeyan is a scholar, researcher, innovator and engineer. His research career started at DUT in 2015 and he believes that whatever he has achieved to date, started from the noble institution, DUT. His research interest lies in nanotechnology, composite, nanocomposite, biocomposite and tribology. Dr Gbadeyan is amongst other excellent academics nominated in the NSTF Awards.

The NSTF Awards are also known as ‘Science Oscars of South Africa’. These are the largest awards in South Africa that recognises and celebrate outstanding contributions to Science, Engineering, Technology (SET) and innovation. Dr Gbadeyan feels honoured to be nominated in these prestigious awards because it means his work is seen and acknowledged by the SET and innovation sector.

“The nomination is a great honour for DUT and me. It is a pronouncement of quality research conducted at this noble university, leading to a notable output recognised nationally. It also means visibility for me, the University and our research output,” shared Dr Gbadeyan. He hopes by God’s grace that he wins the award.

Prof Keolebogile Motaung, Acting Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Research, Innovation & Engagement at DUT recognised Dr Gbadeyan’s innovation, black polymer composite and the contribution it has to Science, Engineering and Technology (SET). The nomination came after the project was awarded the Innovator of the Year Award at the DUT ENVISION2030 Institutional Excellence Awards 2021/2022.

After hearing the news of being nominated, Dr Gbadeyan received a nomination form that had to be completed and submitted. Some of the information required included a career profile, research activities, publications, academic supervision and current and future projects. Dr Gbadeyan is eternally grateful to God for the opportunity of being nominated for the awards.

Dr Gbadeyan thanked Prof Motaung for nominating him for this award and Prof Kanny for his technical contribution, supervision and support toward this project. “I appreciate my colleagues at Composite Research Group for their encouragement. I sincerely thank my family for their sacrifice, support and prayers,” said Dr Gbadeyan.

Also commenting on his outstanding nomination in the NSTF Awards was Prof Motaung, who expressed how proud she was of Dr Gbadeyan and that his nomination talked directly to DUT’s ENVISION2030 strategic objectives that highlights that DUT people will be creative, innovative, entrepreneurial and adaptive to the changes of the world.
