Agriculture Firm Scoops top Connected Kenya 2018 Innovation Award
The Connected Kenya 2018 Summit will be concluded in a few hours’ time. However, today’s discussions, which covered diverse topics in the fields of IoT, as well as highlights surrounding the legal framework for a knowledge economy preceded the fair’s 2018 Innovation Awards sponsored by Kenya’s branch of computer technology corporation, Oracle.
Financial Services Category
Winner: Mary Mwangi of Data Integrated Limited. The firm’s product is called Mobiltill Upesi that helps businesses sell, manage, report and grow their trade with a personalized solution tailored to business needs.
Second place: Tairus Ooyi with MOBUSHULE TECHNOLOGIES’s product called KopaKaro.
Third place: Joel Muli of Mobiscrow Solutions Limited. Their flagship product is called Mobiscrow.
Social Equity Category
Winner: Oscar Raha of The Information and Communication Technology Authority (ICTA) emerged at the top with its Good Conduct Generation product.
“Once the app is turned on, it will be linked with ecitizen portal where the user is asked for login authentication. Once logged in the fingerprint scanner detects all fingers and auto fills it in the C24 Form used by the CIDs in Kenya to evaluate if the applicant is ready. Once approved the certificate will be sent to the eCitizen portal. So the innovation is only a link between the Fingerprint Scanner and C24 Form linking it to eCitizen,” reads a statement from the firm.
Second place: Bernard Kung’u of BlogBook.
Third place: Omollo Harold of Succinct Consulting Services that offers community internet for Big Agenda 4 implementation.
Agricultural Category
Winner: Gervase Wakoli of Engoho Kuku Farmer. Engoho is a cloud-based platform that connects different agribusiness stakeholders and provides them with the tools necessary to make their business profitable and sustainable, and for easy monitoring and management.
Second: Peter Kithuku of Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries & Irrigation that presented a fertilizer subsidy system.
Third place: Allan C’oredo of FarmIT with an agricultural SMS & market linkage system.
Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) Category
Winner: Bernard Oduor of Galena Media that created mFoleni, a queue management solution.
According to Galena, the system was developed to eliminate long queues and ensuring customer satisfaction and at the same time maximizing productivity with happy and engaged staff.
Second Place: Lily Kariuki of COSEKE Kenya Limited that developed C-ONE electronic document management system.
Third place: Francis Ngungi of Franotech that offers online services.
Wholesale and Retail Category
Winner: Evans Mwiti of Movetech Solutions Limited. The group’s product is a POS system that syncs payments data to the cloud.
Second place: Dorcas Muthoni of OpenBusiness Africa.
Third place: Sarah Nyambura of Adryde Marketing.
Education and Training Category
Winner: Patrick Mutuku of the Presidential Digital Talent Programme (PDTP) Portal. We have covered the product extensively in previous posts.
“The product helps advance service delivery with internship secretariat that faces a lot of challenges to carry out day to day activities. Through our innovation Government has a pool of professional accessible online for forming task force and determining the qualified personnel to carry out duties in the big four. Our innovation is an enabler to achieve the big four,” reads a statement from the winner.
Second place: Wariara Waireri of The Engineering Lab Africa.
Third place: Simon Warui of Enabla Solutions.
Housing and Urbanization Category
Winner: Steve Ngethe of One-Touch Interactive. The company’s product, m-Rent, is a rent management tool for property managers.
Second place: Herbert Thuo of MjengoPay.
Third place: Patrick Githaiga and James Ngugi of Safgo Limited and Deadan Group Limited respectively.
Tourism
Winner: Mutethia Mbaabu of Cloud Nine Experience Limited.
“Cloud9xp is a web platform and mobile app that lets wander lusters discover and book tours and experiences in Africa at often discounted prices. Users have over 500 curated activities to choose from in over 20 destinations and experiences range from off-the-beaten-path places to tourist attractions,” reads a staement fron Cloud Nine.
Second place: Nahashon Diaz of Ninaform Solutions.
Water and Sanitation Category
Winner: Wangu J. Mwangi of SHOFCO
Community Development currently provides a clean and affordable water to the Kibera community, and WASH education facilitated by committees made up of Community Health Workers (CHWs).
Second: Michael Ondor of Poseidon Pump System
Manufacturing Category
Winner: Dayvee Ngugi of Paytree Group Limited
Paytree provides an e-commerce service MZIZZI that provides an avenue for businesses to advertise, sell, get paid and deliver their wares.
Second place: Caroline Kanyi of Laf Solutions Enterprises
Third place: Joshua Machinga of Kenya Ceramics that offers ceramic water filters.
Health Care Delivery
Winner: Gerald Makori of Pearl Medicare and Equipment Limited
Pearl’s product, M-tibu, is a Digital Healthcare platform where a multitude of medical specialists can be found at the touch of a button, where they can offer real-time video consultation services to any location in Kenya and at any time.
Second place: Leonard Mabele of Tungana.
Third place: Nicholas Mageto of Bluetech Solutions
Gender, Youth & Vulnerable Groups
Winner: Sandra Maryanne of Anisan.
According to Anisan, Ndovu Care contains the motion mover detector that detects the Elephants, the LED light lights, the siren that scares away the Elephants and alerts community through the SMS notification, unlike the traditional methods like beating of drums, use of scrap metals, chillies, screams, fire and gunshots commonly used by Kenya Wildlife Service, that has not been effective.
Second place: Samuel Kirubi of Refrence Technology
Third place: Basele Stephen of Kurunzi Social Enterprise.
Overall Winner
Engokho Kuku Farmer, the agriculture-based firm was crowned the summit’s overall winner.
Sponsored by Oracle, the winners received multiple goods from electronic manufacturers Pace Africa and Motorola. Also, they will secure a free working space at iHub for 3 months. Lastly, Oracle will offer them free hosting space on its cloud.
