Apply: Africa Food Prize 2021 for Innovation in African Agriculture (US $100,000 Funding)

In Africa, agriculture has a significant social and economic footprint as 60% of the population of sub-Saharan Africa is smallholder farmers, and about 23% of sub-Saharan Africa’s GDP comes from agriculture.

Yet, distance, limited quantities of produce, lack of access to storage, limited technical know-how, and climate change, among other constraints, are present realities for many African farmers.

With the understanding that the dual objectives of agriculture in Africa are to provide food and enable people to build thriving businesses, the Africa Food Prize is inviting applications from individuals, institutions, and organizations that are pioneering innovative solutions to address the challenges farmers face across the continent.

The Africa Food Prize

Launched in 2005 as the Yara Prize by Yara International ASA in Norway to honor achievements in African agriculture, the award was later changed to the Africa Food Prize.

The distinguished award seeks to recognize and celebrate Africans who are taking control of Africa’s agriculture agenda.

It spotlights initiatives and technological innovations that can be applied across the continent to usher in a new era of food security and economic opportunity for Africans.

The Prize has brought acclaimed recognition to 18 recipients from Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, Tanzania, Uganda, and Zimbabwe whose groundbreaking achievements promote vibrancy in the African farming sector, making African farms more productive, profitable, and resilient.

The nomination process for the Africa Food Prize 2021 starts with nominations being sent to the Africa Food Prize Secretariat.
