Black Project – 10 Years of Innovation and Performance
Black Task– 10 Years of Development and Performance
Black Task was born out of a shared love for enhancing the on-water experience for paddlers of all ability levels.
Ten years later, our passion for developing high-performance and has only gotten stronger. And while we enjoy seeing our professional athletes set world records and win world titles—- BP professional athletes won 14 titles in 2019—- what truly inspires us is YOU.
We want YOU to experience that very same stoke and love for watersports that inspired us to make our first fin over a decade ago. This is our story and we welcome you to join our ohana.
The Start
Black Task stemmed from humble starts as a backyard task for co-founders Chris Freeman and Tom Hammerton. The objective was basic: Design a better windsurfing fin that would elevate their performance and speed. While these custom fins were originally produced their own individual satisfaction, it wasn’t long before fellow windsurfers took notification and began requesting for their own set of customized fins.
Recognizing they had a shared dream for building much better equipment, the 2 pals signed up with forces and formally developed Black Task in 2010.
At the time, the focus was strictly on windsurfing. With standup paddling starting to take off, they began designing high-performance SUP fins. However with an outsider frame of mind, Tom and Chris were complimentary to innovate and breaks norms. They lost little time and quickly attracted the interest of Bart de Zwart who was looking for an advantage in the SUP 11 Cities Race.
It wasn’t long prior to a number of top standup paddlers captured wind of Black Task and soon started utilizing our fins. In 2019, and broke multiple World Records. The secret is in the innovation.
Better Technology, Better Performance
At Black Task, we do not subscribe to uncertainty or gut-feeling when it pertains to developing high-performance devices. To build something reliable, it needs to be done right.
Because of that, Black Task has purchased a combination of innovative innovation and professional paddler feedback to assist develop the fins and paddles that power you.
Our style process starts with advanced computer system software that allows us to establish new prototypes through mindful CFD analysis (computational fluid dynamics). When we have our preliminary prototype, we tweak our paddles and fins with extensive real-world screening.
To improve our testing capabilities, we acquired a 3D printer to do all of our prototyping for both fins and paddles. Our latest fin—- the—- was the very first fin to have actually been fully developed and tested utilizing a 3D printer from start to finish.
The procedure proved to be a game-changer.
“Without 3D printing we were always restricted with the variety of molded models we could make,” stated Freeman. “Now we have the ability to check a lot more concepts and variables in each style and press the limitations quickly.”
Teaming Up with Elite Professional Athletes to Make Elite Paddles and Fins
Advanced technology may be one big part of the equation, however our success would not be possible without an incredible group of first-rate athletes. Throughout the years, we have teamed up with a few of the sport’s greatest paddlers including,,, Zane Schweitzer, Olivia Piana, Fiona Wylde, Sonni Hönscheid, Martin Vitry and lots of more.
These elite professional athletes have actually put our paddles and fins to the test at the sport’s highest level of competitors—- and come away with gold.
“One of the parts of my original marketing plan check out, ‘Develop fins which allow athletes to set world records and win world titles,” said Freeman. “I wished to be a little part of an athlete’s success and help them achieve their dreams. For Black Project athletes to have actually now generated an overall of 19 World Titles is very fulfilling and gets me fired up.”
When our athletes aren’t standing atop the podium, they are working behind-the-scenes with our group to test and provide feedback about new models. And as a perk of being located in on Maui’s north shore, our backyard is our testing grounds and our debriefing space is the beach.
“Hawaii has been a fantastic base for us, with numerous great water days in a range of craft and conditions, it is the ideal proving premises,” stated Freeman. “There is no wonder why so much windsurfing, standup paddling, big-wave browsing, and foiling development has actually occurred on Maui’s 8-mile north shore stretch from Peahi to Kahului Harbor.”
The Brand for Every Standup Paddler
Standup paddling isn’t practically performance and power, at the end of the day, it’s about getting people on the water and enjoying themselves. When we began out a years back, we chose we wished to build more than paddles and fins, we wished to construct a neighborhood.
“What I believe stands Black Job apart, is our community,” stated Freeman. “We all need a place to call house and Black Task has become a typical thread linking paddlers of all capabilities throughout the world.”
At Black Task, we believe every paddler—- no matter skill-level—- should have premium equipment. To ensure this happens, we subsidize our entry-level paddles so new paddlers can experience the feel of a high-end paddle at a reasonable price point.
“Thanks to our development and support of full-time athletes, our paddles and fins have actually ended up being popular with enthusiasts and more skilled paddlers,” said Freeman. “Nevertheless, we feed whatever we find out into our complete line of paddles and fins.”
Everybody take advantage of lighter, more powerful and more effective paddles and fins. The work we make with elite professional athletes is vital to making remarkable items for those new to the sport and we likewise support a variety of efforts to get more youths into the sport.
We understand the future of standup paddling is reliant upon the next generation of paddlers—- both young and old. We are all set to meet that difficulty and provide state-of-the-art devices to all paddlers.
The Future
“I am incredibly proud and thankful for the chances which we have had as we near the end of our tenth year. As with many organizations in our position, we have had some growing discomforts and are working diligently to secure our long-lasting success.” Freeman
Covid-19 has actually provided obstacles– which we have faced head on, while providing a lot more opportunities– which we have actually welcomed. We are devoted to helping all water enthusiasts reach their health, health and paddling objectives.” Freeman
Quickly we will be unveiling some extremely unique brand-new products for the 2021 season as we continue to push the innovation envelope. At the same time, we are working to lower our impact on the environment and run in a socially conscious way.” Freeman
