Building On Innovation With GE At CEPSI 2018

A spark of inspiration has been the starting point for many new inventions. Turning sparks of inspiration into products such as high-efficiency turbines, digital solutions delivering substantial data-driven savings, and new equipment tackling major industrial challenges, is something that GE has been doing for more than 100 years.

New energy sector innovations on the horizon were showcased at the recent CEPSI 2018 event and the GE Reports team had the opportunity to talk with some of the engineers, and developers, behind these.

Alistair Wells – Asia Regional General Manager – Grid Software Solutions at GE Power

What you need to know – GE’s combination of data insight and innovation can be a catalyst for solutions across your entire transmission network.

“If you want to unlock the power of data, you need data analytics that can deliver”

While High-Voltage and Medium-Voltage networks have increasingly seen adoptions of advanced distribution management systems, using comprehensive data insight to improve performance, Low-Voltage networks have widely remained untouched. In his paper, Collaborative Control Innovations In LV Network Management, GE’s Alistair Wells highlights the emergence of innovation in the Low-Voltage network space, and how data analytics is pivotal to the solution from GE.

Ross Willoughby – Regional Engineering Manager at Alstom Grid

What you need to know – Transformers are capable of either increasing or decreasing the voltage and current levels of their supply, without modifying its frequency. Transformer maintenance can be a complex task, but a combination of GE’s intimate understanding of equipment and innovative techniques can help show the way.

“Frequency analysis is an important tool, but you need to understand the benchmarks”

Transformer analysis and maintenance is a vital on-going task, often requiring physical analysis of designated assets. In his paper, Case Study: Transformer Maintenance – Assessing the Mechanical Integrity of the Active Part, Ross Willoughby, Regional Engineering Manager at Alstom Grid, explains how GE uses frequency response analysis to assess and understand the physical changes in transformer winding, as well as the wider challenges of transformer maintenance.

Austin Byrne – Senior Product Manager – Substation APM at GE Grid Solutions

What you need to know – Collecting data isn’t enough, you need the strategic analysis to unlock the possibility it presents.

“Data doesn’t make your talent obsolete, it leverages your talent to deliver new solutions”

Asset performance management (APM) platforms offer a powerful tool for business. But generating the greatest benefits from these tools requires strategic analysis that produces truly actionable data. In Utilizing Data Analysis Applications To Implement An Effective Asset Performance Management Strategy, Senior Product Manager of GE Grid Solutions, Austin Byrne, highlights the importance of an appropriate data analysis strategy for APM platforms.

Chin Fei Chow – Business Development Manager

What you need to know – Fault location across a 2,300km HVDC line might sound tough, but the engineers at GE are up for the challenge.

“Innovation isn’t always about new technology, sometimes it’s utilising existing technology in an intelligent way”

Fault location in substations requires simple assessment of current and voltages, but that simple task becomes far more challenging on HVDC lines. In his paper, Travelling Wave Fault Location on HVDC Lines, Business Development Manager Chin Fei Chow explains how GE’s technology is helping customers to overcome this challenge.

Klaus Payrhuber – Senior Product Marketing Manager, GE Power

What you need to know – Turbocharging gas engines offer a rapidly deployed power solution that is more than equal to the challenges of the Asian climate.

GE has been a pioneer in the development of two-stage turbocharging gas engines, with the first units deployed in 2010. Since then over 350 units have been delivered worldwide, providing 4.5-10 MW of rapidly deployed distributed power to help quickly meet the energy needs of customers.

In his paper Gas Engine Case Studies in Asia, Klaus Payrhuber, Senior Product Marketing Manager at GE Power, explains the substantial benefits these two-stage turbocharging gas engines can offer to customers in the region.
