Call for Applications: Bioscience Innovation Bootcamp

BioInnovate Africa is a regional science and innovation-driven initiative, supported by Sida and implemented as a programme of the International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology (icipe). It operates in Burundi, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, and Uganda. We also team up with partners in South Sudan.

BioInnovate Africa makes it possible for scientists in Eastern Africa to establish and equate innovative bioscience research study ideas, innovations and innovations into practical usages in society, which promote economic development, create jobs, and minimize poverty. Thus, BioInnovate Africa fosters the advancement of a sustainable bioeconomy in the area by strengthening the capability of scientists and institutions to link innovative concepts from the bench to organization.

As part of the effort, a 5-day bioscience development bootcamp has actually been organized for entrepreneurial scientists in eastern Africa to empower them to establish innovative and commercially practical biological-based concepts in areas including however not limited to;

  • Agroecology
  • Food and feed
  • Drainage treatment
  • Biopharmaceutical
  • Bioenergy
  • Biomaterials
  • Medical diagnostics
  • Green chemicals

Who is qualified to apply?

This call shall be limited to residents and/or nationals of the 7 (7) BioInnovate Africa participating nations connected to a university, research study institution, private business, or other related company (either as a staff member or student).

How you will benefit

  • Financial investment Preparedness— Winners of the pitch occasion will get admission to a 3 months acceleration program by Villgro Kenya & & BioInnovate Africa.

Selection requirements

  • An ingenious biobased idea with possible for business application (40 points)
  • A multidisciplinary team of 3 (3) members e.g. comprising of academia and industry/private sector (30 points).
  • At least 2 of the staff member must be youth, i.e. within the age bracket of 15-35 years (10 points)
  • Technical proof of concept will be chosen over unverified concepts (20 points).

How to use

Applicants are invited to send the following as part of their application:

  • A support letter/email from your organization of association (signed by e.g. the head of the department)
  • CVs of group members
  • A one-page personal motivation declaration by the group leader

All applications will be uploaded through the online portal

Application due date

The due date for receiving applications is fifth October 2020 at 23:59 hrs Nairobi Time. Late submissions will be disqualified.

Next Actions

Effective groups will be informed through e-mail by 9th October 2020 Selected teams are anticipated to take part in the bootcamp for five days on 17-21 October 2020.

The groups will pitch their innovative ideas during the first Regional Bioeconomy Conference to be hung on 22 October 2020.
