How the GCII Works
Who are the world’s top 100 private companies likely to make a significant impact on the cleantech market over the next 5 to 10 years? Cleantech Group has answered this question annually since the GCII’s inaugural year (2012) using the following methodology:
Phase 1 – Nominating companies from five sources, including:
Phase 2 – Once nominations are made, Cleantech Group rewards scores to these companies using a system where more nominations equates to more points. A shortlist of the best performers who’ve attained the most points is made, then, the 91 expert panelists vote positively or negatively based on their individual knowledge of each company’s innovation, market, and ability to execute.
Phase 3 – Data from phase 1 and 2 are pooled and adjusted for geographic and other biases. Companies who retain the highest points at the end of this final phase make it onto Cleantech Group’s list of 100.
For the GCII’s 2021 version, there were 11,505 nominations from more than 75 countries. Of these, a total of 321 “semi-finalists” were considered for the top 100.
Congratulations to the 11 Canadian companies who made it through the ringer and onto this prestigious list! This is truly remarkable, and you’ve earned it!
