Cousins Center for Science & Innovation wins American Institute of Architects design award – The Source

The American Institute of Architects (Georgia) presented Oglethorpe University’s Cousins Center for Science and Innovation with an Honor Award for Design in the category of Renovation/Restoration, during a virtual presentation on Friday, Dec. 4. Finalists were evaluated by leading expert judges from across the country.

Completed in 2019, the Cousins Center is a striking blend of modern design and Oglethorpe’s historic collegiate Gothic style. Designed by Atlanta architecture firm Cooper Carry, Inc., the structure is composed of a new light-filled 25,000-square-foot addition that encompasses the original 20,000-square-foot renovated Goslin Hall, creating a completely reimagined 45,000-square-foot facility.

The Cousins Center for Science and Innovation offers discipline-specific laboratory classrooms for physics, biology, chemistry, and ecology, plus independent study labs, open study rooms, workshops, faculty offices, and sweeping views of the academic quad. The building also offers learning spaces for the Hammack School of Business in collaboration with Porsche Cars, N.A. and Global Payments.

Previously, the Cousins Center’s eye-catching design and focus on sustainability was highlighted by Architectural Digest, Building Design + Construction, Curbed Atlanta, and others.

The building is named in honor of 1927 Oglethorpe alumnus I.W. “Ike” Cousins, a science major and three-sport letterman, and in recognition of a generous gift from the Cousins Foundation in Atlanta.
