Creativity & Innovation course sparks entrepreneurial spirit at Vermont Technical College

RANDOLPH CENTER, Vt. (Nov. 5, 2020) – Research shows that organizations need leaders who are creative thinkers eager to thrive in a climate that fosters innovation. To meet those needs, Vermont Technical College (VTC), Vermont Small Business Development Center (VtSBDC) and the Vermont Virtual Learning Cooperative (VtVLC) will introduce the course “Creativity & Innovation” for high school and Career and Technical Center (CTE) students this spring where they can earn three college credits using their Dual Enrollment and/or Fast Forward vouchers.  Registration will open in November.

Creativity & Innovation will be offered through a combination of remote class sessions and online delivery, and taught by Tamie-Jo Dickinson, VtSBDC Consultant and CVU Faculty along with Laurel Butler, VtSBDC Business Advisor and Student Entrepreneur Specialist.

“Like so many businesses and organizations in Vermont, VtSBDC has responded to the impact of COVID-19 by adding many virtual resources to our extensive advisory and educational services,” said Linda Rossi, State Director of VtSBDC. “We are very excited to partner with Vermont Tech and VT Virtual Learning Coop to help prepare today’s students for tomorrow’s workforce.”

Dickinson and Butler have developed a curriculum that explores tools and techniques for developing and evaluating ideas for new products, services, and the business models to execute these ideas. Students will focus on building the growth mindset, leveraging failure, ideation generation, financial modeling, pitching, storytelling, and more.

VtSBDC has operated in partnership with the Vermont State Colleges since the center’s inception in 1992, with the Lead Center at Vermont Tech. Several of VtSBDC’s advisors also serve as guest lecturers and part-time faculty members for courses focused on entrepreneurship, technology and business, helping prepare Vermont Tech students to be future members of the workforce.
