PENAMPANG: The people of Sabah need to regain their confidence in innovation and competitiveness in order to steer Sabah to greater heights, just like in the olden days.

Speaking to reporters, Penampang Member of Parliament Datuk Darell Leiking said that he believes the Sabahans have always been people with great innovative minds, but what decelerates the capability is when emotion takes over.

“I noticed when a segment of our political spiral starts creating emotional issues, emotions overtake our cautions and intelligence,” he said at a press conference after launching the Malaysia Autoshow Sabah 2019 at Penampang Cultural Centre here, on Saturday.

“Let’s go back to the time where Sabahans were more innovative and driven to bring the state to competitiveness and amazing position,” he said, adding that a lot of things started in Sabah during the 1970s and 1980s, such as the first five-star resort in Malaysia in 1983, which was the Shangri-La Tanjung Aru Resort.

The Minister of International Trade and Industry emphasised that elements of self-sympathy must be rid of, where one must be bolder and braver instead.

“If there are issues that we are not happy about, we should look for solutions instead of finding faults. We have to bring ourselves that way,” he asserted.

Darell said, the people should follow the footsteps of Vietnam and Cambodia where the people are learning from the past, and not blaming the past.

“They are now leapfrogging into something else (instead of blaming the past) such as new and high technologies, and working societies,” he said.

He urged the Sabahans to go for the state’s original destination, which is to be equipped with talents and confidence in order to bring great development into the state.

Darell also called on the people to not blindly accept any negative statements projected to them, but find solutions to shed light on the matter instead.
