To build and maintain a sustainable environment, it is always advised to depend on recycling waste and use natural resources instead of chemical ones. This is what the Egyptian team had done. The team wanted to build a classroom for kids to get a proper place for education by using recycled and natural materials. In a village in Al-Fayoum governorate named Ezbet Ishak (Isaac) new classrooms were built by using recycled plastic bottles and bamboo trees. In a remarkable leap towards sustainable development, the visionary Egyptian team has set an unparalleled benchmark with their recent project, which involved creating a classroom entirely out of recycled materials, they’ve not only provided a nurturing educational environment for children but also raised crucial awareness about solid waste management and the use of natural resources in construction. The Winning Project of the Holcim Award By Building A Classroom From Bamboo Trees – 9000 Plastic Bottles. Working on this project was not easy for the team as the members faced many challenges to get everything done. To use solid waste and recycle it, the team had to collect around 9000 plastic bottles to recycle to be able to use them in the building process. As it is hard to get this number of bottles, the team decided to launch a campaign to collect this number of bottles; the members put booths in hotels and universities where people can leave their plastic bottles. The campaign gave the team the desired result and they got 9000 bottles. The project’s environmental impact is two-fold: firstly, it reduces reliance on harmful environmental resources for construction by utilizing recycled materials like plastic bottles and bamboo. This directly conserves natural resources and minimizes the environmental footprint of the building process. Secondly, the project raises crucial awareness about waste management and responsible resource use through its innovative approach. Later, the Holcim Foundation launched the Holcim Awards for Sustainable Construction. The Award is a prize of a total of 2 million USD. The award is the world’s most significant competition for sustainable design and has two categories. The first one is the main category for established professionals and the second Generation category is for young professionals and students. Holcim Foundation for Sustainable Construction is an independent entity operating within the Holcim Group, of which Lafarge Egypt is a member.
