Next Innovation Webinar: Data System & Software Development Challenges in a NASA Research Program Turned Private Enterprise, Airborne Snow Observatories, Inc. (6/23 at 1 pm ET)
ESIP’s 2021 Webinar Series, which focuses on our annual theme of Leading Innovation in Earth Science Data Frontiers, will continue on 6/23 at 1 PM ET/10 AM PT. This installment will feature Airborne Snow Observatories Inc. (ASO), a start-up born out of a NASA JPL research program, which aims to provide inventories of mountain snow water resources worldwide with unprecedented precision. Evan Burgess, Lead Data Scientist at ASO, will discuss the data system and software development challenges in transitioning research-focused code and data into an operational system in the AWS cloud. Rapid data turnaround, the fast pace of innovation at ASO and complexities inherent in airborne remote sensing data have forced ASO to rethink its approach to processing and data distribution. SeREEn Initiated by Semantic Tech Committee to Raise Awareness of & Collaboration Between Semantic Efforts
The Federation of Semantic Resources for Earth and Environmental Science (SeREEn Federation, or SeREEn) is being developed to improve awareness of and collaboration between the many, scattered semantic resources emerging in the domain of Earth and environmental science. The first action of the SeREEn Federation is to compile an easily maintainable and open registry of such semantic resources as an attempt to better understand:
- Which resources are under active development and what topics they address,
- Which resources are mature and, in contrast, which are in alpha or beta stage,
- Where resources are housed and/or accessed,
- Whether the resource is available under a reusable license,
- Whether the resource is operational-grade (persisting across many projects and stable enough to build systems on) or research-grade, and
- Whether it includes standard metadata about the ontology.
The SeREEn Federation is an activity of the ESIP Semantic Technologies Committee. It is in its infancy. All are welcome to contribute by joining in the monthly telecon held on the 2nd Tuesday of each month at 4 pm ET. Find connection info on the ESIP Telecon Calendar.

USGEO Request for Information and Public Virtual Dialogues on Commercial Earth Observations and Geospatial Data and Services Practices
The United States Group on Earth Observations (USGEO) is preparing a document containing best practices for Federal government procurement of commercial Earth observation and geospatial data and services, per the 2019 National Plan for Civil Earth Observations. Information from private sector providers and users; academia, and the public is critical to this effort. Register below for the following public dialogue events:

Digital Extended Specimen: 2nd-Phase Community Consultation
The alliance for biodiversity knowledge has convened a follow-up to the consultation that was held earlier this year to converge the ideas behind two related but distinct concepts:
Phase 2 will focus on capturing the infrastructure capabilities needed to support Digital Extended Specimens. Similar to the first phase, a landing page for the second consultation has been created and is now live on the GBIF community forum. GBIF, BCoN, ALA, DiSSCo, NSC Alliance, iDigBio, and TDWG, among others, invite you to contribute to this consultation, which aims to expand participation in the process, build support for further collaboration, identify key use cases, and develop an initial roadmap for community adoption and implementation. CODATA Connect – Data Science Journal Early Career Essay Competition (due 8/31)
CODATA Connect Early Career and Alumni Network in collaboration with the CODATA Data Science Journal (DSJ) is pleased to invite to its second Essay Competition for Early-Career Researchers (ECR), defined as a university undergraduate, graduate, post-graduate students or early career researchers/ data professionals within five years of completing their highest qualification. CODATA Connect exists to ensure a structural and sustained collaboration and support for the activities of the alumni of CODATA-RDA Summer Schools, of the CODATA China and Trieste Training Workshops and other early-career researchers and data professionals involved in the CODATA community and those of partner organizations. Topic for the Essay: “Challenges and Benefits for governments and industry involvement in the Open Data Initiative.” Learn more here.
CALL FOR PAPERS: Software Citation, Indexing, and Discoverability (due 7/16)
Software is increasingly essential to research. It can be viewed as both a tool to be recorded (for reproducibility) and cited (for credit) as a part of scholarly research works, as well as an output of research that can be used, reused, and further developed. Making this happen effectively leads to challenges in how it is cited, indexed, and discovered. These include challenges relating to: software metadata; identifiers for software and their relationship to those of other research objects; the role of other stakeholders such as indexes, libraries and registries; fostering adoption; development of related tools; and the role of the FAIR principles in this space. This special issue will focus on recent work addressing these challenges. Learn more here.
