FAV Honored by UAB’s Harbert Institute for Innovation and Entrepreneurship

First Avenue Ventures proudly received the 2022 Innovation Award for Community Partnership of the Year. The Innovation Awards, given by the University of Alabama at Birmingham‘s Bill L. Harbert Institute for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (HIIE), recognize UAB inventors, scientific discoveries, and community partners.

The award celebrates First Avenue Ventures’ work with area start-ups, including through the First Avenue Ventures Life Science Fund I. Founded one year ago, the multi-million dollar Fund provides capital and guidance to life science start-ups, with a special focus on innovative science developed at UAB. “We are deeply honored by this recognition and inspired by the ground-breaking work of UAB scientists, ” First Avenue’s Principal, Mike Goodrich, said of the award. “We look forward to continuing our work with UAB-based start-ups, innovators, and entrepreneurs.”

At a ceremony on October 21, several of the Fund’s portfolio companies were also recognized by the Institute. ResBiotic, the Fund’s first investment, received the Start-Up of the Year award. Anath Shalev, founder and Chief Scientific Officer of TIXiMED, received the EntrepreHER Award in honor of her thirty years of work studying and developing treatments for diabetes.

“First Avenue is thankful for the support provided by UAB and the HIIE,” said Mike Goodrich. “We see tremendous potential in helping to commercialize the cutting-edge science at UAB, and the work done by the amazing people in the HIEE office is incredible.  Thank you to Kathy and her team.”
