Four North American Insurers Leading in Innovation

Winners of the 2019 Efma-Accenture Innovation in Insurance Awards in North America

In November we wrapped up our second year of the North American edition of the Efma-Accenture Innovation in Insurance Awards, announcing the winners on November 6 in Chicago. It’s exciting to see the program continuing to grow in Canada and the US. We’re witnessing clear trends around automation and insurtech, and I think the cross-pollination of ideas is hugely valuable to all the companies that participate. This year’s winners have developed some incredibly innovative solutions. I’m thrilled to share them here.

North America Innovator of the Year

MetLife won this award for several innovations, including:

Business & Operating Model Transformation

RGA won in this category for APEXA, an innovative digital platform that has transformed how life advisor screening, contracting and compliance are conducted across the entire Canadian life insurance industry. APEXA is a simplified risk mitigation tool that automatically screens and continually monitors advisors, driving cost savings through operational efficiencies.

Skopenow won in this category for its data analytics platform developed for fraud detection in both the underwriting and claims processes. Skopenow’s automated platform combines mass aggregation, identity resolution and computer vision analytics to enable users to search through unstructured data.

Offering & Experience Innovation

Trupanion won in this category for automating claims in pet insurance. Using AI-driven automation, Trupanion pays claims directly to the veterinary practice in less than 30 seconds. Customers pay only their share of the bill, which reduces their out-of-pocket costs.

The winners were selected by a panel of judges made up of senior executives from insurers in North America. Each entry was assessed using three criteria:
