Funding announced for social care innovation centre
The Government has announced new funding for a range of technology focussed health and social care projects, including £7.5m for a UK Centre of Evidence Implementation in Adult Social Care.
The new Centre will aim to use high quality research evidence to
improve and support innovation within social care and allow more people to
receive care at home.
Led by the Health Foundation and
the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC), it
will seek to improve
the uptake of evidence-based interventions in commissioning and front line
practice, and build capacity among staff working in adult social care to evaluate
innovations and improvements.
Operating across the UK, and drawing on UK wide learning, the
Centre will bring together academic teams and experts in the mobilisation and
implementation of research evidence, with social care staff, providers,
commissioners, policy experts, and people with lived experience of adult social
care.
From next month, the Health Foundation and the ESRC will be
inviting qualified and experienced teams to express interest in applying to be
part of the leadership team that will manage its development and delivery.
The government has also announced that it will inject £50 million into NHS diagnostic services to enable faster, more accurate diagnosis of diseases like dementia and Parkinson’s.
The fund will support
the work of existing Centres of Excellence in digital pathology and imaging
with artificial intelligence.
The Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) is pledging a further £83 million, of which £14 million will go to bioscience projects and technologies across the UK that could treat osteoarthritis and develop new vaccines.
The remaining £69.5 million of the total investment will help fund four
British projects across the UK.
Health and Social Care Secretary Matt Hancock said: “We’ve got to bring NHS technology into the 21st century. I’ve seen for myself how better technology and diagnosis can save clinicians’ time so they can concentrate on care.
“The NHS is now spearheading world-leading technologies that can transform and save lives through new treatments, diagnosis techniques and care. I’m determined that the benefits of these advances will improve the lives of thousands of patients whose conditions have long been considered life-limiting.”
