Research continues to underpin Qatar’s development as the nation progresses toward achieving its National Vision for 2030 (QNV 2030).

The country has been focusing on research across various fields to encourage positive economic growth.

To enhance the country’s resilience and prosperity, the Qatar Research, Development and Innovation (QRDI) Council was set up in 2018, comprising a cross-section of local and global leadership from government, academia, and industry.

The council, chaired by His Excellency Qatar’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of State for Defence Affairs Dr Khalid bin Mohamed Al Attiyah, has developed the QRDI 2030 strategy featuring seven transformational elements pertaining to innovation and enterprise system, foundation research system, talent, funding, governance, regulatory environment, and integrated information systems.

His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani reviewed the QRDI 2030 strategy as well as the executive implementation plan for the strategy at the Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU) Research Complex yesterday.

HE the Prime Minister and Interior Minister Sheikh Khalid bin Khalifa bin Abdulaziz Al Thani, HE the Dr Al Attiyah and Qatar Foundation (QF) vice chairperson and CEO HE Sheikha Hind bint Hamad Al Thani along with some other top officials accompanied HH the Amir in the tour.

During the visit, HH the Amir was also briefed about some of the most significant accomplishments of the research institutes based in the HBKU Research Complex. These included key achievements in energy, environment, biomedicine, cybersecurity, computing, and Artificial Intelligence (AI).

He was also told about the present and future initiatives and plans of the HBKU Research Complex.

The QRDI 2030 strategy seeks to build a robust, integrated national system that links Qatar’s RDI endeavors with the country’s national imperatives, during this decade.

The strategy aims to consolidate the role of the private sector in spearheading research and development institutes in Qatar while also enhancing communication with international entities, focused on RDI, to create promising careers for emerging local talent.

Complementing Qatar’s successes in sports and energy, RDI will create new avenues for the country to achieve economic diversification in line with the QNV 2030.

Expressing his delight on HH the Amir’s visit, HE Dr Al Attiyah said, “His Highness has always been generous in providing guidance on the principles and pillars that support all facets of the research, development and innovation ecosystem.”

“Qatar Research, Development, and Innovation Strategy 2030 represents an ideal opportunity to drive growth as a national economic engine for Qatar post World Cup 2022. With economic diversification as a main outcome, the strategy sets out to promote the growth of various economic sectors, as well as expanding RDI-based projects and investments, enabling a wider range of local enterprises to achieve global competitiveness, enhancing the ability of government agencies to innovate in public services,” he explained.

During his tour, HH the Amir also met with senior researchers from Qatar Biomedical Research Institute (QBRI), Qatar Computing Research Institute (QCRI), and Qatar Environment and Energy Research Institute (QEERI).

These entities are collectively making scientific advances through their dedicated research and innovation efforts.
