“With innovation as the basis of its operations, Huawei aims to promote technological application and serve customers to the best of our ability through collaboration.” by Li Wei, Director at Assurance & Managed Services Department, Eastern Africa Multi-country Office.

  1. Huawei invests heavily in security R&D and capability development.
  • Huawei has more than 3,000 employees working full-time on cyber security R&D. Each year, the company spends about 5% of its R&D budget on cyber security and privacy protection related R&D.
  • By the end of 2020, Huawei held more than 100,000 active patents across over 40,000 families, among which 2,963 are related to cyber security and privacy protection.
  1. Huawei helps customers manage security risks through technological innovation.
  • Innovation in security technology: Huawei continues to research cutting-edge security technologies, such as cryptography and confidential computing, centering on business scenarios such as 5G, AI, cloud computing, and smart devices. It is also committed to driving the adoption of these new technologies, in order to improve the native security capabilities of Huawei products and help customers manage existing and emerging risks.
  • 5G base stations: Huawei provides functions such as rogue base station detection, subscription permanent identifier (SUPI) encryption, anti-DDoS over the air interface, and built-in firewalls, which enhance privacy protection for end users, reduce the attack surface, and strengthen defense, thereby enhancing cyber resilience.
  • Devices: Huawei is committed to protecting user privacy through technological innovation. Five data processing principles are considered in our product design, including data localization, data minimization, transparency, and controllability. In addition, Huawei’s devices are supported by the Trusted Execution Environment (TEE) certified to CC EAL5+, the highest security level available. TEE ensures secure storage and processing of user biometric data, such as fingerprints and faces, and ensures the highest-level payment security. Privacy-enhancing technologies protect user privacy by blocking ad tracking, anonymizing shared photos, and masking identity during screen projection.
  1. Open collaboration: While continuously increasing investment and building up its own security and trustworthiness capabilities, Huawei engages extensively with industry stakeholders and shares capabilities.
  • In July 2020, the German Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) released the TR-03148 Secure Broadband Router Technical Guideline, providing security requirements and test specifications for broadband routers. Huawei was invited to participate in the development and Proof of Concept (PoC) of the specifications.
  • In December 2020, the National Cyber and Encryption Agency (BSSN) of Indonesia presented the “Piagam Apresiasi” award of KAMI (information security) to Huawei, recognizing Huawei’s exemplary and outstanding contribution to information security in Indonesia.

Our bug bounty program for HUAWEI CLOUD, Huawei Mobile Services, mobile phones, and other domains is a continued success. Through this program, we encourage white hat hackers to discover vulnerabilities in Huawei products so that we can work with numerous security experts in the industry to build a responsible, transparent, collaborative, and secure vulnerability ecosystem.
