Joni Mitchell to Receive Les Paul Innovation Award at the 2020 NAMM Show TEC Awards
On Saturday, Jan. 18, 2020, the 35th annual NAMM Technical Excellence and Creativity Awards (TEC Awards for short) will be one of the highlight events of the 2020 NAMM Show in Anaheim, California. This year’s TEC Awards will present the legendary Joni Mitchell with the Les Paul Innovation Award, it was revealed on Monday.
As the news release stated, the Les Paul Innovation Award is what its name implies, and “is given on behalf of the Les Paul Foundation to honor individuals that have set the highest standards of excellence in creative application of artistry in the spirit of the famed audio pioneer, inventor and musician, Les Paul.”

Mitchell will be present at the TEC Awards ceremony for the evening, it was also announced. That’s great to hear, especially given her 2015 brain aneurysm and subsequent recovery process.
The TEC Awards are among the most popular events of any NAMM Show weekend, typically, with past recipients of the Les Paul Innovation Award including Peter Frampton, Joe Perry of Aerosmith, Jackson Browne, Pete Townshend, Todd Rundgren and more.
This year’s Awards will be hosted by comedian/musician/Portlandia co-creator Fred Armisen, and tickets to the TEC Awards can be purchased at this link.
As the ticket site states, however, purchasing a TEC Awards ticket does not grant you access to the NAMM Show.
