Dr Shabir Ahmad Parah, a senior faculty member at the University of Kashmir (KU), has made waves in the field of traffic safety with his groundbreaking invention. Recently granted a patent, his technology aims to mitigate night traffic accidents caused by glare from traffic lights. This innovation couldn’t come at a more critical time, as over 52 per cent of traffic accidents occur during the night. The patent, awarded on February 9, 2023, under the Indian Patent Act, highlights the significance of Dr. Parah’s contribution to road safety, according to information provided by the University of Kashmir. Leading a dedicated team from KU’s Department of Electronics and Instrumentation Technology, including Parsa Sarosh, Sabreena Mushtaq, and Sheezan Fayaz, Parah’s invention promises to revolutionise the motor landscape. The University Innovation Centre plans to collaborate with automobile manufacturers to assess the feasibility of integrating this technology into various vehicles. With Parah’s innovation, the future of road safety looks brighter, offering hope for reducing accidents and saving lives on the roads, both in India and beyond. Stanford University’s Scientist Ranking, led by John Ioannidis, places Parah in the top two per cent globally, particularly in Networking and Telecommunications and Artificial Intelligence and Image Processing. His impact spans over 185 research papers across esteemed journals and conferences, with collaborative ventures and book editing adding to his acclaim. Noteworthy awards, including six IEEE Conference honours, underscore his dedication.
