Kecipir wins 2nd place National Geographic & Sky Ocean Ventures’ Innovation Challenge
Oceans Plastics Innovation Challenge
Launched in February 2019, the Ocean Plastic Innovation Challenge is a competition asking problem solvers from around the globe to develop novel solutions tackling the world’s plastic waste crisis. Selected from an impressive group of nearly 300 teams from around the world, the winners and two runners-up in the three categories share a $300,000 prize pool for implementing their ideas to reduce the amount of single-use plastic reaching the ocean.
Kecipir was awarded Circular Economy runner-up for showing great promise in it’s potential for impact and scalability.
A convenient and affordable option for the middle class
Via it’s app and webstore, Kecipir allows consumers to order vegetables, fruit and other groceries; these are then delivered directly to their house completely free from single-use plastics. With its order-in-3-steps app and farm-to-fork model the venture can transform the shopping behavior of millions of Indonesians. By sourcing directly from the farmers to the customers, Kecipir is able to deliver fresh organic food with zero plastic and food waste at prices even lower than supermarkets. Making this a unique solution, not only for ‘the happy few’ but really affordable and accessible for the masses.
If Kecipir only captures 1% of the Indonesian market the venture would save 4,400 tons of single-use plastics from the oceans annually. That is equal to 22 blue whales, or 47,000 washing machines. But this is only the beginning!
Scaling Kecipir’s impact
“Today the fresh food packaging market is valued at 83,5 billion globally and projected to grow 6,5% annually, reaching 118 billion by 2024. Kecipir’s mission is to pave the way for plastic-free food delivery to become the norm,” says Tantyo Bangun, founder and CEO of Kecipir. “Over the summer Enviu joined our team as Co-Entrepreneur to scale the company and its impact.”
Building on Kecipir’s proven business model and highly scalable platform in Jakarta, and Enviu’s experience in building impact driven ventures, the ambition is to grow Kecipir’s impact exponentially starting with growing throughout Indonesia, and then scaling to other emerging economies.
