The Scandal star was the keynote speaker at the opening day of the Fast Company Innovation Festival in New York.
She joined Editor-in-chief at Fast Company Stephanie Mehta for a talk entitled The Enduring Power of Live Performance.
There she discussed playing Anita Hill in the 2016 movie Confirmation, which told the story of the sexual harassment allegation against US Supreme Court Judge Clarence Thomas in the early 1990s.

‘Anita Hill taught me what fearlessness really is,’ Washington said. ‘She really taught me what sacrifice looks like, and how to maintain your dignity in the face of absolute absurdity.
‘What Anita did was she gave up her anonymity for the sake of our democracy.’
The Emmy nominee also discussed working with Scandal creator Shonda Rhimes.
