Kucho di Otrobanda wins Social Innovation Award

The Curaçao Heritage Foundation has won the Social Innovation Award 2020 for the educational platform ‘Kucho di Otrobanda’.

Kucho is a character who walks through the alleyways of Otrobanda and takes young students along digitally while learning about his surroundings. The website www.kuchodiotrobanda.com is available in two languages (Dutch & Papiamentu). The images were created by the late artist Ariadne Faries and the story has been written and narrated by author Laura Quast. Throughout the story there are small games and interactive functionalities to support language development and local knowledge about local built heritage, flora, and fauna. The project comes with a manual for teachers to be able to use the tool in the classroom.

Every year the Curacao Innovation & Technology Institute recognizes innovative products and services in the categories Social Innovation, Business Innovation and Junior Innovation.

‘Kucho den Hanchinan di Otrobanda’ is a product of the Curaçao Heritage Foundation and has been made possible by Prins Bernhard Cultuurfonds, Curaçao National Commission by UNESCO and Fundashon Material pa Skol.

A special thank you goes to the team that has put so much effort in producing this award winning platform, including Michael Newton, Laura Quast, Ariadne Faries, Rianne Hellings, Eddy Baetens, Aishel Statie, Ace Suares, Prins Bernhard Cultuurfonds, Kuki+Ku, Monumentenraad, Fundashon Material pa Skol and all others who in one way or another contributed to realizing this project.
