Lagos develops Nigeria’s tech ecosystem with Eko Innovation Centre
Lagos State is about to use technology to boost its economy. And to achieve this, the megacity has come up with various tech-driven innovative solutions that will create fresh employment.
The project involves the establishment of a fresh Eko Innovation centre, which was set up to incubate lots of start-ups from several sectors in Lasgidi.
Even if the Eko Innovation centre is not a public investment, as it will run on its own and will be not funded by the government, new Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu had this to say, “Technology is the way to go, it is the way of the future and it is the way forward for the entire universe. We believe that from this centre, innovations around the environment, education, transportation and health would be developed.”
“People from here would come and give us innovative ideas to solve our transport problem; ideas developed locally but can solve problems globally.”
Founder and developer of the fresh centre, Mr Victor Afolabi disclosed that the dream of a tech-driven Lagos State economy is the massive inspiration for its establishment. He also said with this move, Lagos will not just become a source of motivation for other states in terms of government but also in the technology economy.
His words, “Tech centres are a vital part of the entire start-up ecosystems because they provide platforms and opportunities for collaborations and building support structures that are important to the growth of any economy.
“Lagos over the last few years has been one of Africa’s cities with a robust tech ecosystem; it is currently the city with the highest number of technology hubs on the continent. In keeping with this fast-growing paradigm of technology development, the new Eko Innovation centre was birthed.
“We aim to discover, incubate and curate new start-ups that will create new technologically driven solutions and add better value to an already growing tech ecosystem on the continent.”
Mr Victor revealed that the main dream of the centre is to aid the transformation of Nigeria’s technology sector and that of Africa at large.
He continued by saying he is inspired by the desire to come up with an environment for the youths to develop innovative solutions. He plans to boost job opportunities without doing away with tech, because as for him, Lagos is the most appropriate place to make these dreams come true.
He said, “We saw in the Lagos manifesto an agenda to make the State a 21st Century economy. The only way to create a 21st Century economy is to make sure you are creating businesses and solutions to problems that are driven by innovation and technology.”
