Mark Cuban-Backed MeshTek Labs Wins Lightfair Innovation Award » Dallas Innovates
With the advent of LED and AI, lighting is looking more and more miraculous these days. Now a Dallas-based company is shining its own light on next-gen lighting systems—and it’s been recognized with a 2023 LightFair Innovation Award for its efforts.
LightFair 2023—the world’s largest annual architectural and commercial lighting trade show and conference—is underway now through May 25 in New York City.
“MeshTek is leading the increase of transformative digital lighting installations that were once cost-prohibitive and complex,” Mark Cuban, star of ABC’s “Shark Tank” and an investor in MeshTek, said in a statement. “Their patented, long-range Bluetooth mesh is the brilliance behind the solution and the future of outdoor device connectivity.”
Digital color-changing with state-of-the-art apps
MeshTek Labs, a leading Internet of Things company that creates and builds smart lighting and other systems, won the award for its BlueHopper Permanent Outdoor Lighting system. The next-gen system offers digital color-changing, real-time scheduling, multi-user, and multi-network capabilities, working “seamlessly across 50-plus types of products with state-of-the-art apps.”
MeshTek says the proprietary BLE mesh from its IoT platform “provides the world’s only long-range, bi-directional network connectivity with Bluetooth for devices with built-in artificial intelligence and edge computing.”
“Our ability to control and manage thousands of devices within millions of square feet of areas using Bluetooth is an unsurpassed milestone that is ideal for commercial, residential, and municipality use,” Founder and CEO Swapnil Bora said in a statement.
Supported by 35 issued patents
This system is way, way more advanced than that LED light bulb you may have screwed in above your porch. MeshTek says it has been issued 35 patents for its technology, enabling breakthrough lighting solutions for everything from school safety systems to greenhouse systems to smart city solutions.
Through its partnership with BlueHopper, MeshTek says it has created a solution to address challenges faced by manufacturers and installers to achieve reliable and efficient control and networking “at a fraction of the cost for their lighting and device solutions for large-scale, multi-property installations.”
Founded in 2011. the company also provides award-winning smart lighting solutions under its consumer-facing ilumi brand, available at Best Buy, Home Depot, Fry’s, Amazon, and other retailers.

Mark Cuban has some hot takes on the metaverse, and he doesn’t stop there. He made a recent virtual appearance on the YouTube channel Altcoin Daily to share his thoughts on Bitcoin, Ethereum, XRP, Cardano, cryptocurrency in general, and more.
Whether he’s buying a pro pickleball team or disrupting big pharma with his cost-plus drug company, Mark Cuban says he’s a “ready, fire, aim” businessman. So he surrounds himself with “ready, aim, fire” perfectionists to keep him from “screwing everything up.” That’s just one insight the billionaire shared in a fireside chat with Backstage Capital founder Arlan Hamilton at the Venture Dallas conference last week. “There’s always going to be somebody smarter, there’s always going to be somebody faster, better,” Cuban added. “I just try to work a little harder.”
These standouts—startup founders, tech pioneers, educators, creators, social innovators, and business leaders—are transforming entire industries and making waves in their respective fields.
