In a significant move under its digital transformation journey, aimed to bolster Qatar’s technological capabilities, the country has opened the TASMU Innovation Lab.

His Excellency the Minister of Transport and Communications Jassim Saif Ahmed Al Sulaiti yesterday launched the lab, which is a pioneering initiative supporting the TASMU Smart Qatar Program.

The lab offers an “open and inclusive environment” to technology experts and researchers to develop, test, and work on their ideas and to find innovative solutions to complement the different focus areas under the Smart Qatar Program.

On the occasion HE Al Sulaiti said Qatar continues to attain sustainable development across all sectors.

“There is no doubt that catalyzing the information and communication technology (ICT) ecosystem in Qatar and achieving the maximum benefit from the potential provided by advanced technology are the key pillars of this sustainable development.”

“We are continuing our efforts to transform Qatar into a Smart country through the principal initiatives of TASMU such as the Innovation Lab, in which we are supported by a collaborative and thriving ICT ecosystem,” he added.

Assistant Undersecretary of Digital Society Development of MOTC, Reem Al Mansoori, said the lab aims to position “Qatar as a center of technological innovation.”

This is underpinned by an ambition to benefit the citizens, residents, and visitors in the country who will experience an improved quality of life as new smarter technologies are introduced.

According to the MOTC, the TASMU Smart Qatar Program runs the development and implementation of over 100 projects pertaining to advanced technologies in five priority sectors comprising transport, logistics, environment, healthcare, and sports.

This new lab will offer innovation-as-a-service, the MOTC said. It will sponsor the innovation process from a conceptual stage and extend until the final results have been achieved.

The lab seeks to engage research and academic institutions to utilize the private sector competencies and foster technological research and development in the country.

An exciting feature of the program is that it will allow stakeholders to see the fruit of their projects through experiments at various designated Pilot Zones.

“These zones will provide a safe environment for projects such as self-driving cars and drones, to be effectively tested before commercialization and viability where parallel legal and regulatory frameworks are developed in cooperation with the relevant authorities,” MOTC added.
