Montanaro Global Innovation fund review
Originally written by Darius McDermott on What Investment
The Montanaro Global Innovation fund focuses on small and medium-sized businesses investing mainly, but not exclusively, in areas like robotics & automation, cloud computing, cyber security, connectivity, digital transactions and healthcare technology.
The fund is managed by Guido Dacie-Lombardo, who also co-manages the LF Montanaro UK Income fund, which I rate very highly. He is supported by Yannis Gidopoulos and Hal Miller.
Montanaro’s in-house team of 14 analysts will also offer support, as will a specialist Advisory Committee, all of whom have significant experience of the technology, innovation and healthcare space.
The fund has an investment universe of around 1,500 companies, with all research conducted internally. ESG is also integrated into the process.
Until 31 December 2022, all share classes of the fund will be charging a reduced management fee of 0.25 per cent, with no minimum investment.
The benefits of this fund are clear, as the pandemic has only accelerated our dependency on technology and innovation. The focus on small and mid-sized companies means this fund can complement a number of other global funds with exposure to larger tech names, like Amazon and Facebook. The team at Montanaro are also experts in finding hidden gems in this part of the market. The one downside is the potential for a performance fee in the future.
I would rate it 4 out of 5 stars.
Past performance is not a reliable guide to future returns. You may not get back the amount originally invested, and tax rules can change over time. Darius’s views are his own and do not constitute financial advice.
