Few other branch-out concepts from cloud computing’s overarching umbrella have been as impactful as multicloud.

Focusing on this technology, Dell Technologies Inc. and Deloitte Consulting are working to create better, more conducive environments within which organizations can either migrate to or maximize their existing stacks.

“Anybody who’s leveraging cloud computing is going to find that there’s a need to leverage multiple clouds and multiple kinds of technologies,” said David Linthicum (pictured, left), chief cloud strategy officer at Deloitte. “And, therefore, we’re kind of focused on what’s in between the clouds versus the clouds themselves.“

Linthicum and Bradd Lewis (pictured, right), senior vice president and general manager of the Global Transformation Office at Dell, spoke with industry analysts Dave Vellante and Lisa Martin at the Dell Technologies World event, during an exclusive broadcast on theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s livestreaming studio. They shared insights on the multicloud space at large and the notable areas for improvement. (* Disclosure below.) 

Where orgs are falling short

Dell and Deloitte share a partner ecosystem within which they advise companies on things like cloud adoption and digital transformation strategy. Thus, they have a birds-eye view of where organizations are going wrong in multicloud implementation. Chief among these is that many organizations are standing up their infrastructures within closed, restrictive environments, according to Linthicum.

“They’re managing their clouds within the silos,” he explained. “And so, in other words, they’re using whatever needed tools are in the particular cloud provider to do operations, to do security, to govern and things like that. The reality is it’s a more holistic approach that needs to be taken. We need to span these solutions across the different cloud providers and also the existing legacy systems.”

For its part, Dell is advocating a holistic approach and advising its client companies on both legacy and cutting-edge external cloud solutions for compliance, performance and security.

“It all has to be architected and operated well,” Lewis explained. “But as important as the tech is the question: How are you going to go and build that common model of operational construct around all of these different platforms so you don’t end up with a silo-based approach?”
