BAGUIO CITY, Oct. 9 (PIA) – – The Philippine Statistics Authority-Cordillera (PSA – CAR), in partnership with the City Government  of Baguio launched the observance of National Statistics Month(NSM) 2019 in the   Mondayf lag raising ceremony simultaneous with the opening of Infographics exhibit on vital statistics at the city hall lobby.

PSA – CAR Regional Director Villafe Alibuyog   outlined that this year’s NSM theme, “Data Innovation: Key to a Better Nation” aims to emphasize the importance of innovating statistical systems, processes and technologies in coming up with quality statistics – statistics for planners, policy makers and program implementers – that are timely and responsive to the challenges of the fast changing world, climate change and man-made disasters such as traffic, drug problem and environmental degradation, among others.

“When we say data innovation, we combine the use of both the traditional and non-traditional data sources to gain more nuance of responding to development challenges, reframe issues, and shed new light on problems that seem impossible to solve,” Alibuyog explained.

“With better policies and programs based on quality statistics that are produced through effective innovations, the Filipino people will be assured of the achievement of the country’s long-term vision – “Ambisyon Natin 2040” that aims to provide “Matatag, Maginhawa at Panatag na buhay” (strongly rooted, comfortable and secure) for all,” she added.

In the NSM opening program with the member agencies of the Regional Statistical Coordination Committee, PSA – CAR informed    that innovations are already being introduced in the management of their office and the Philippine Statistical System (PSS) on methodologies on data collection, statistical information management and dissemination, and on statistical advocacy.

For the PSS, emerging trends and innovations are also already being infused such as research on measurement and poverty using new technologies, enhancing statistical capacity of national line agencies and LGUs, embracing new technique and technology, and encouraging research and access to data.

In pushing for quality statistics as a driver of progress and nation building, PSA will continue to work on strengthening its pilot projects with the help of their development partners, continuous capacity building of their central and field office staff, and strengthening partnership with NGAs, LGUs and civil society organizations, the media and the private sector, Alibuyog added.
