Which came first: The can opener or the can? You might assume they were developed together. If you have ever tried to open a can with anything other than a can opener, you know it’s a tall order.
Surprisingly, though, the can came first by nearly fifty years. Humanity spent half a century hacking at their cans with knives and other household implements. Finally, an inventor saw the need for a better way, and the rest is history. That’s the very definition of “Necessity is the mother of invention.”
In the business world, it’s more fitting to say, “Necessity is the mother of innovation.” Every advancement comes from addressing a need, whether it’s the customers’ need, the business’ need, or both. There’s certainly no shortage of new and exciting necessities popping up these days, and we’re seeing some amazing innovation arising to meet them.
