Novelis To Partner With Georgia Tech On Innovation Hub
Atlanta’s rolled and recycled aluminium firm Novelis Inc. and the Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech) announced earlier this week a US$2.5 million project to establish the Novelis Innovation Hub at Georgia Tech to support research and other educational pursuits that connect Novelis’ experts with the faculty and students at Georgia Tech.
Novelis says the site will serve as host to basic and translational research as well as research into business modeling. A director for the Hub has yet to be chosen, but Novelis says Georgia Tech will recruit a senior interdisciplinary faculty member by the 2020 academic year.
Dr. Chaouki Abdallah, Executive Vice President for Research, Georgia Institute of Technology, says the collaboration marries the two institutions’ strengths.
“The collaboration with Novelis demonstrates our continued focus on providing students and faculty with unmatched academic and practical experiences through the creation of innovative corporate relationships. Our expertise in material science and advanced manufacturing, and business and AI systems is among the very best in global higher education and we look forward to working with Novelis’ scientific, engineering and business innovators to develop new, industry- and world-changing solutions.”
Under the agreement, faculty at Georgia Tech will be invited to pursue sponsored research and innovation needs supplied to the Hub by Novelis, with an advisory board composed of representatives from both parties in place to evaluate proposals.
This is but the latest collaboration between the two institutions, as Novelis has long funded research and equipment at Georgia Tech, and the university has provided interns and full-time employees to Novelis for many years.

Novelis is a subsidiary of Mumbai’s Hindalco Industries Ltd. Based in Atlanta, the firm accounts for almost half of Hindalco’s consolidated revenue. The world’s largest recycler of aluminium, Novelis conducts operations in ten different countries, employs around eleven thousand people, and reported US$10 billion in revenue for the most recent fiscal year.
