Nursing Detroit Training Center Opens at Durfee Innovation Society

Designed to meet demand in the health care sector, the Nursing Detroit Training Center has opened literally in the heart of the city at the Durfee Innovation Society next to Central High School.

The new center, located at 2470 Collingwood St., will provide career education, training, and mentorship opportunities. The center recently received certification from the state of Michigan for certified nursing assistants.

This is only one of the variety of programs that will be offered by the facility. The first class of future certified nursing assistants, or CNAs, will begin training at the center in late fall 2023. The entry-level © role provides support to nurses and their patients in hospitals, nursing homes, and other medical facilities.

“This is a big step in Nursing Detroit’s ongoing commitment to provide opportunities in the medical field for Detroit residents,” says Felicia Vannostrand, founder and CEO of Nursing Detroit. “This training will also help support quality medical care for the community by people from the community. It’s truly a win-win.”

Vannostrand was working as a registered nurse at Detroit Medical Center when she founded Nursing Detroit in 2018.  Her vision was to build and support the next generation of nurses and caregivers through training, mentorship, and education, focusing on the city of Detroit and surrounding areas.

The organization supports all levels of health care, from CNAs and emergency medical technicians to RNs and nurse practitioners, respiratory therapists, phlebotomists, radiology technicians, and other roles integral to caring for the community.

“There is so much opportunity now in the medical field, which will continue into the future with our aging population,” Vannostrand says. “While not easy, these are very satisfying, financially rewarding jobs. So we work hard to support success for all of our nurses, whether they are just starting out or have worked in the field for years.”

Nursing Detroit nurtures partnerships with the major medical systems in the region to connect employers and employees in the nursing community.

In addition, some members of their social media collective provide guidance to those in the health care field through monthly online mentorship workshops. Others work as advocates to increase opportunities that will create a diverse talent pool.

As part of the program, the Nursing Detroit Pre-apprenticeship Program is a 6-week summer work/training program held in collaboration with the city of Detroit’s GDYT (Grow Detroit’s Young Talent) Program.

Detroit youth ages 16 to 24 are afforded opportunities in both didactic and clinical skills training in an array of careers such as home health aide, nurse assistant, respiratory therapist, surgical technologist, licensed practical and registered nurse, nurse practitioner, and nurse anesthetist job roles.

Additionally, they visit area hospitals, nursing homes, and other medical facilities to provide a “real world” experience.

“It’s so exciting to see a spark ignite when the students realize they may have found their career,” says Dr. Maunda Snodgrass, a psychologist at Henry Ford Health in Detroit. “Often, they just haven’t been exposed to what opportunities are out there. Nursing Detroit is grateful to be the catalyst that makes that connection.”

One of the major goals is to be the premier portal for all things health care, helping those who are eager to enter the field navigate career opportunities.  The group is in the process of filing for 501(c)(3) nonprofit status and created a foundation, the Nursing Detroit Visionaries Foundation, to encourage financial support.
