Physee, a Dutch startup known for its electricity-generating smart windows that harness solar power, wins the 14th edition of the KVK Innovation Top 100.
The independent jury, led by innovator Ruud Koornstra, announced this recently. Each year, KVK publishes this ranking with 100 concrete innovations in Dutch small and medium-sized businesses.
Physee produces fully transparent and colourless electricity-generating windows. The company developed PowerWindow, transparent windows that convert light into electricity.
This innovative method saves up to 50% of the total energy demand when renovating conventional commercial buildings, and up to 100% of newly constructed commercial buildings, with a payback time of 3-5 years.

Delft University of Technology Spin-off!
For the unknown, Physee was founded by two applied physicists, Ferdinand Grapperhaus, and Willem Kesteloo, who, during their graduation, found a way to generate electricity with transparent glass.
Notably, it is a spin-off from research conducted at the Department of Radiation, Science & Technology (RST) at the Delft University of Technology on Luminescent Solar Concentrators led by Erik van der Kolk.
Postcode Lottery Green Challenge winner in 2016
Back in 2016, this Dutch startup won the Postcode Lottery Green Challenge. For your information, it is one of the world’s largest competitions in the field of sustainable entrepreneurship and aims at achieving a carbon zero economy. They were presented the award and the €500,000 prize by Her Majesty Queen Máxima.
World Economic Forum’s Technology Pioneers!
Every year, the World Economic Forum’s Technology Pioneers community recognises early-stage companies around the globe that are involved in the development of new technologies and innovations that are poised to have an impact on both society and business. In 2017, the Delft-based startup was selected as one of the World Economic Forum’s Technology Pioneers for its smart and electricity-generating windows.
MIPIM competition winner!
Last year in March, Physee came third at the MIPIM Startup Competition, where the jury selected the most capable and innovative startups that tackle the most prominent urban challenges around the world.
Installed commercial projects!
Right after the revealing of PowerWindow, a couple of years ago, the startup made its pilot program for the Netherlands’ biggest bank Rabobank. This pilot program has made Physee popular, and other companies in the Netherlands have also approached them to use this new technology.
Since then, the Dutch startup has worked on various commercial projects right from retrofitting empty office spaces, to shaping new sustainable homes. These include Dura Vermeer Inspiration Center, Grafton Palace, Pharos, Binck Kade in the Hague, Goede Doelen Loterij, at the Zuid-As business district in Amsterdam, and BOLD tower in Amsterdam.
