Plans for game-changing science innovation and research centre on the Isle of Man
Leading regeneration and clean energy specialist Peel NRE, has announced ambitious proposals for a science innovation and research centre (SIRC), sustainable energy park and medicinal cannabis facility on land at Cooil Road, Braddan, Isle of Man.
The proposals which follow a recent change in the legislation of cannabis production and exportation on the Isle of Man would bring inward investment to the Island and create a once in a generation opportunity for the Island to become a leader in the emerging medicinal cannabis sector.
Peel NRE’s planning application will include detail for the first phase of the development, including two units for the cultivation facility as well as an access road, engineering works and preliminary landscaping.
Peel NRE is asking members of the public to engage with us during its public consultation to help shape the plans before an application goes to the Department of Environment, Food and Agriculture later this year.
Located at the corner of Cooil Road and the A5 (New Castletown Road), this flagship scheme will create new, high quality technical jobs, bring further economic opportunities and deliver investment to the Isle of Man that will unlock partnerships across the public and private sectors.
The proposed development will help the Isle of Man develop home-grown talent that will contribute to cutting-edge research into cannabinoids for pharmaceutical uses. By incorporating and building on innovative technologies found in cannabis facilities across the world, the development will set a gold standard for the burgeoning cannabis industry, enabling the Island to lead the way on medicinal research and cultivation best practice.
The multi-million-pound development will represent a major investment in the Isle of Man, bringing economic opportunities to the local supply chain from the construction to operational stages. It will generate high quality technical jobs by establishing a destination for science and technological excellence showcasing the Island’s innovation and capitalising on the global growth in the sector.

The local community is being asked to provide their comments on the proposals before a planning application is submitted in the coming months. The public consultation period will be held between Monday 14th February and Monday 7th March 2022.

- Registering online to attend one of two webinars, which will be held on Wednesday 23rd February and Thursday 3rd March 2022, at 6pm.
Comments submitted by 7th March 2022 will be reviewed by the project team before finalising the proposals and submitting a planning application to the Department of Environment, Food & Agriculture.
