Quicker Food – Empowered by Innovation

Market Flash

Food processing is highly monotonous and repetitive in nature. Automation of these tasks enhances product quality, process efficiency, and saves labor charges as well. The growth in overall automation levels is allowing processing and packaging plants to introduce new products on the same assembly lines.

Propelling Pointers for Food Automation

– Changes in the consumer demands towards preferring fast, affordable, and easily accessible food options have led to the transformation in the food & beverages industry, with vendors leveraging automation technologies to scale operations and help companies stay relevant in the dynamic market environment.

– Increasing demand for advanced automated systems such as robotics will boost the growth of the food automation market over the forecast period. For instance, according to a survey from the Association for Packaging and Processing Technologies, 94% of food packaging operations are using robotics already. As for food processing, approximately a third of companies are using robotics.

– Technological enhancements in the automation industry and the stringent food safety regulations regarding food hygiene are boosting the market’s growth positively.

Food Automation in the States

The United States is expected to hold a significant market share in the North America packaging automation market.

– In 2020, PGP International’s California plant implemented a new automated packaging line to make flour packing in valve bags quicker, safer and more power-efficient. The automated packaging equipment features a high-speed filling process, in-line ultrasonic sealing capacity, and automated palletization and stretch-wrapping facilities, to ensure stability and safety of the packaged product, even during transit.

– According to the Robotic Industries Association and Association for Advancing Automation, orders of robotic systems by food and consumer goods manufacturers grew by 56% in 2020. Industry statistics–released by the Robotic Industries Association (RIA), part of the Association for Advancing Automation show that North American companies ordered 31,044 robotic units, valued at USD 1.572 billion in 2020.

Key Headway

Motors & generators type is expected to hold a significant share in the food automation market. The growing significance of motors in motion control applications involving high-pressure wash-down and high torque applications with precise motion control has greatly improved their functionality. Generators ensure the smooth and efficient functioning of systems in the food industry.

Competitor’s Vision

The food automation market is moderately competitive. Major players include ABB Ltd, Rockwell International Inc, GEA group AG, Siemens AG and, Mitsubishi Electric Corporation. In July 2021, JLS Automation announced that it has developed an end-of-arm tool (EOAT) to help CTI foods automate its hot to handle taco packaging line. Tacobots efficiently upgrade and automate production with a unique two-pick mechanical tool. The recent line integration project wins a 2021 Manufacturing Innovation Award from ProFood World.
