The SkyTrain Customer Communications and Lonsdale Quay Exchange upgrade projects have been recognized by the Engineers and Geoscientists of British Columbia as a notable project in 2020-21.
They are two of 53 projects from British Columbia and around the world spotlighted in the May/June 2021 issue of Innovation, an industry magazine for engineers and geoscientists in the province.
The SkyTrain Customer Communications Upgrade Project, which brought real-time information screens to stations, was a huge undertaking from an engineering standpoint. It involved the removal of old and retrofitting of new equipment in every station along Expo and Millennium Line — 32 stations in total (excluding the Evergreen Extension). As our stations range widely in age, each presented its own unique construction challenges to navigate.
The project team skillfully managed construction work in multiple stations at the same time to complete this project as quickly as possible with minimal impact to customers. This major upgrade has been well received and gone a long way to improving how we provide timely, accurate, and accessible real-time information — giving customers the tools and confidence they need to use our transit system.
TransLink worked with our contractor to create a welcoming, memorable, and modern space for our customers at Lonsdale Quay Exchange. This complex project was managed all while maintaining operations for our customers throughout the entire construction period.
Kudos to the project teams and everyone involved!
