SSP Awards “Best Innovation” to DataSeer, and Recognizes People’s Choice Poster Presentation
June 15, 2022 – At the Society for Scholarly Publishing (SSP) 44th Annual Meeting, held in Chicago, IL, June 1-3, DataSeer was awarded the “Best Innovation” People’s Choice Award during the SSP Previews Plenary: “New and Noteworthy Product Presentations.”
This lightning-round plenary offered the chance to learn more about the industry’s newest and most innovative products, platforms, and/or content in 5-minute, back-to-back presentations. Attendees left with exposure to a wide breadth of content on new and updated products of interest to the scholarly publishing community. After twelve presentations, attendees were asked to vote for the product, platform, service, or content that displayed the most original or creative thinking.
Dr. Tim Vines, founder, and director of DataSeer introduced attendees to their toolkit for open science, which includes Open Science Audits and High Fidelity Article Checks that use AI and NLP to promote the sharing of research data. DataSeer aims to address the need for a low-cost, scalable solution to show researchers how to comply with stakeholder data-sharing policies.
These tools scan scientific texts for sentences describing data collection, then give best-practice advice for sharing that type of data, easing the burdens of compliance for researchers, enforcement for journal editors, workflows for publishers, and access for funders. This allows DataSeer to meet stakeholders where they are at in achieving FAIR (Findability, Accessibility, Interoperability, and Reusability) science standards.
Additionally, SSP was pleased to offer scholarly posters again as a new category of Annual Meeting presentations. These posters provide an avenue to share additional content with attendees, and can even lead to more in-depth and interactive exchanges of information than is possible in concurrent sessions. Meeting attendees were asked to vote on their favorite poster for the “People’s Choice Award.”
The winner is “Ten Simple Rules for Post-Pandemic Preprinting” by Michele Avissar-Whiting, Editor in Chief at Research Square Company. “Ten Simple Rules” reflects on Research Square’s learnings from more than 20 months of navigating rapid research dissemination in a global pandemic and presents a list of 10 best practices for authors preparing a preprint submission.
Congratulations to DataSeer and Michele Avissar-Whiting on your well-deserved recognition!
