It’s been a little over a year since The Community Transport Company (TCTC) launched into an exciting new branch of business with the aim of giving back to the community. In that short space of time, The Community Driving School has fast become recognised by its peers, picking up the Business Innovation of the Year Award at the recent Community Transport Organisation (CTO) annual awards. The Community Transport Company, Chief Executive Officer, Bethany Langford said we set up The Community Driving School to provide commercial driving lessons to learners in the Coffs Harbour, Bellingen and Nambucca Valley areas. “The business is a social enterprise venture which means any profits made go back into providing services for the community, helping to tackle social problems and prevent access isolation, which is the cause of many health issues,” Ms Langford said. “There has been a big push towards social enterprise throughout the not-for-profit industry, as funds from government become harder and harder to secure. The Community Driving School is just one way of future proofing our services within the community.” Driving Instructor Mark Burgess said it is great to see graduates go for their provisional licence with confidence and succeed. “We have had over 16 graduates gain their licence and are safely driving around the region, with the knowledge they have learnt at The Community Driving School,” Mr Burgess said. The school also works in conjunction with government programs delivered by The Community Transport Company, which enables students who are disadvantaged access to free driving lessons. “This means some students who wouldn’t normally have access to a vehicle are able to add many hours to their driving hours and get their licence expeditiously,” he said. The award was judged on the degree of innovation and its delivery as well as the sustainability of the business looking into the future.
